Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Doubleweight sepia photograph of the legendary ballerina in her signature "Dragonfly" ballet, the photograph issued by the Advance Theatrical Shoe Co., signed and inscribed within the image (printed). A few small stains, else fine. 8 x 10 inch (20 x 25 cm).Anna Pavlova is believed to be the first to use supportive slippers for toe dancing, but in no way did she officially endorse this shoe company which appears to have traded on her image for publicity purposes without her authorization. Leo Harris is identified as a designer for Advance Theatrical Shoe Co., Chicago in a Dance Lovers ad, Oct. 1925 and apparently his idea was to make 2 pointe shoe styles: one with a low arch and one with a high arch. By 1928, Leo was advertising his "hollow arch" point shoe and the company continued to produce quality shoes into the late 1990s. It is no longer known for pointe shoes but rather for a line of dance wear produced under that label.

Paris: Bertauts, [1862]. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Lithograph caricature by the French journalist/photographer/caricaturist depicting Alphonse Sax, brother of Adolphe (Belgian inventor of the Saxophone), who had himself patented the saxaphomnitonique system of brass instruments and was an important instrument manufacturer. Depicted in costume as a young Sylphide, the image is from around the beginning of Sax's efforts to demonstrate not only that women were capable of playing brass instruments, but that it was in their interests — on moral, health and potentially even career grounds — to do so.  The caption beneath the illustration reads, translated from the French, "Alphonse Sax (Junior) metamorphoses into Sylphide to better convert the fairer sex to the holy principles of morality and brass instruments!"  Light staining and foxing around the edges, overall in fine condition.  11.5 x 16.5 inches (29 x 42 cm.).

Small 8vo. 160 pp. Signed "Andy Warhol" in bold black ink to the titlepage. A few thin scratches and creases to wrapper laminate, otherwise about fine.In 1961 a fashionable commercial artist named Andy Warhol created an artistic furor in New York with his deadpan versions of the Campbell's Soup can. Since then he has become the most talked about but least understood artist of the late 20th century. Warhol made acceptable the use of industrial techniques in the creation of paintings obsessed with modern clichés--car crashes, Coke bottles, sex symbols such as Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor. At the same time, his films-- Blowjob, Sleep, Chelsea Girls, Lonesome Cowboys --forced us to look at the object/subject, transformed the bizarre into the banal, and remade the form and content of cinematic experiment and production.Originally published in 1971, Peter Gidal's Andy Warhol was the first book written on Warhol's… Read More
