An octavo, measuring 6" by 8", with a pictorial cover by Maxfield Parrish.Fifty-two quotes to live by, one for each week of the year of 1919, surrounded by Art Nouveau borders printed in black and red. The pages are held together at the top with a green silk ribbon. The Parrish illustration, "Jason and the Talking Oak" was done for Nathaniel Hawthorne's Wonder Book in 1908. There are the usual creases along the top edge and corners, as well as a tiny hairline tear beneath one of the binding holes..else this is a fine, bright copy without any soil or marks. Contained in the original pictorial box, printed in green and red.."I Send To You This Greeting With A Message of Cheer and Friendship For Each Week of the Coming Year." The box has some tears at the edges and margins of the top but is complete and perfectly sound. A nice item for the collector of either Maxfield Parrish or Arts and Crafts design. (Coy 35 & 37).

Omaha, Nebraska: Union Pacific System, (1924). A fine copy in original pictorial wrappers. One of the pamphlets issued by the Union Pacific Railroad to promote travel destinations serviced by their trains. Illustrated in both black and white photographic images and full page color plates reproducing artistic renditions of the Golden State's beauty when it was still a wide open paradise filled with promise.

Bunnell and Price, New York, 1852. Bound in the original blind stamped ribbed cloth with a pictorial representation of a lunar voyage on the cover. 12mo. FIRST EDITION. This volume is in two parts, pages 1-45 relate the history of how Richard Adams Locke, a reporter for the New York Sun, concocted a fantastic tale of the existence of moon inhabitants. This report was based on the astronomical discoveries of Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope. Owing to the distance and time for transatlantic travel it was several months before the hoax was discovered. The second part of this volume, pages 46-143 has a separate title page and reprints articles originally published in the newspaper. Locke's imagination ran wild, even to the point of identifying animals and a human-like creature with bat wings. Offset from articles to prelims., blank endleaf excised, scattered light foxing but overall a nice copy of a fragile work rarely found.

Lambertville, New Jersey: Arts & Crafts Quarterly Press, 1993. 0963789635 Quarto, 119 pages plus sixty-three color plates. Bound in cloth in pictorial wrappers. A fine copy of the first softbound edition of this important contribution to the scholarship of the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1922. 8vo. Bound in the original red cloth over boards this is a good copy only with some soiling and wear to spine and tips. This volume does have the rare, original, unrestored A. C. McClurg DUST WRAPPER. The wrapper is soiled with numerous chips and tears, mostly along the folds but is complete with no loss of text. The Chessmen of Mars was one of Burroughs most imaginative and complex works. Per Irwin Porges in his biography of ERB "weaving the theme of the game of chess--called "jetan" on Mars--into the story was truly an inspiration". Burrough's believed this was different than his previous works and fought hard for more money from several magazines but ended up selling the rights to his old standby, Munsey's for $3500.00. New York: Oxford University Press, 1947. An octavo, 118 pages, bound in green cloth with illustrated paper label. Illustrated throughout with Tasha Tudor's charming images of the delights of innocent childhood. A fine copy in the first edition in a first issue dust wrapper. ( $2.50 on the lower corner of the front flap). The dust wrapper is soiled and browned on the spine, but is complete and unclipped. Hare C4.

Oxford: Phaidon - Christie's, (1990). Quarto. Bound in blue cloth, this is a fine copy in like dustwrapper. One of the first and most comprehensive histories on the life and work of one of the most advanced British designers. "In the twentieth century the stylized geometric and functional character of his work has become a major influence on modern and contemporary taste.". The author is one of the most respected collectors and scholars in the field of nineteenth-century design and Japonisme. Dresser's influence in Japan was as keenly felt as it was Europe and America. A sumptuous book, beautifully illustrated in full color and black and white.

London, George C. Harrrap & Co.. An octavo, 138 pages, bound in full leather. Brass studded strap hinges and stamped title and cover ornament in the Arts and Crafts style. This is the deluxe gift edition of the book, with marvelous color illustrations by Evelyn Paul. Ornamental headpieces, borders and textual illustrations in black and red, also by Paul. Top edge gilt. Hinges cracked, else a fine copy of an exceptional book.

Girard, Kansas Haldeman-Julius 1946 First printing Original orange paper wrappers. Thirty-two pagepamphlet stapled along spine. Some discoloration from the staples rusting. Offset from orange wrappers to first and last page. Age toning to text from cheap paper. Despite faults the pamphlet is totally unworn and near fine. Introduction by Thomas Hart Benton. This is a scathing indictment of the established art community in Kansas City and the policies of the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art and their views of what art should be included in the gallery. The essay headings say it all. . . "The Morgue of Medievalism", "Must be Dead 30 Years to Make the Nelson Gallery", "Living Art is Strangled", "Dead Thinks in a Dead Setting" etc. Scarce Paperback Very Good

London: Chapman and Hall, 1913. Bound in original brick red cloth with decorative cover and gilt spine. Trace of wear to the extremities, discreet previous owner's signature, else a fine copy of the First Edition. James Ward contributed several books to the field of design and ornament during the Arts and Crafts period, including Principles of Ornament and Progressive Design. This volume contains twelve illustrations in colour and twenty-two in halftone.

The Clarendon Press and Henry Frowde, Oxford, London and New York. 1903. Beautifully bound in three-quarter vellum over marbled boards. Octavo, 732 pages plus useful 147 page glossarial index bound in at the back. Ornamental spine in the Art Nouveau style with gilt twining stem and flowers. Title and publisher labels lettered in gilt. Marbled endleaves, matching the paper used on the binding. Pictorial frontispiece. Aside from minor soiling, this is a superb example of the Book Arts that flourished at the turn of the twentieth century. This edition of Chaucer's work is edited from numerous manuscripts by the Rev. Walter W. Skeat, noted scholar and professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University. Prized for their beauty and representation of literary achievement, these bindings have become difficult to find in fine condition.

London: George G. Harrap, n.d. (1910). Octavo, 241 pages, bound in full vellum with gilt titles and Art Nouveau ruled borders on both the upper cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Portrait frontispiece. There is overall soiling to the vellum, else this is a handsome copy of one of the "Harrap Library" series, in a restrained binding that suits the work of Mr. Emerson.

This nicely produced book provides an historical perspective on the use of copper as well as useful practical information about the application of one of the most enduring and beautiful architectural elements in fine buildings around the world. Well-illustrated, including three tissue guarded color plates mounted on heavy stock. A few minor stains on the lightly bowed covers, some scattered light foxing otherwise l this is a very good copy of an unusual trade book.

New York: The H. K. Fly Company, (1911). An octavo, 307 pp., bound in cobalt blue cloth with an extaordinary Art Nouveau pictorial cover of a songbird in the branches of a flowering tree against a bright gilt sky. Titles on cover and spine also gilt. This sentimental novel was written by Charles Server from the play by Edgar Selwyn. The back cover and spine have some light spotting noticed only when the book is turned into certain lights. A whisper of wear at the extremites, else this is a brilliant copy of an exceptional publisher's binding of the Arts and Crafts period of design.
