Description:
Philadelphia: William T. Amies, [circa 1880s]. Quarto. lvi, 733 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Illustrated throughout with in-text and full-page woodcuts by Gustave Doré (all included in the pagination). Original publisher's pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and black. 28.5 x 22.5 cm. Very good. Short tears to spine ends and head of rear joint; corners worn. The hinges are partially cracked and tender, and the text block has dropped, but both covers are holding fairly well for such a large and heavy volume. The leaves are a trifle age-toned but, aside from a few minor traces of marginal soiling, the volume is clean throughout. A bright and attractive copy. Later edition in a beautiful example of publisher's cloth.

Description:
Boston: J.K. Wellman, [printed by D.H. Ela], 1844. 16mo. 56 pages. Original printed green wrappers. 11 x 17 cm. Approximately one half of spine perished. The wraps are still attached and the book is held by the original stitching, but the lower third of the text block shows separation between gatherings and along some folds. Some soiling and small stains to the wraps. Corners worn or slightly turned throughout, with slight loss to lower corner of front wrap. Foxed throughout and with occasional small spots of damping. Good only. Twenty-fourth edition, so stated, following the first of the same year. While described as "carefully revised and enlarged" (p. [2]), all of the preceding editions we have been able to identify had the same pagination as this, with the exception of the first edition (46 pages with only 37 recipes advertised). By the end of 1844, the forty second-edition had been published and it was reprinted again in 1845 and 1846. By 1847, an expanded edition was… Read More

Chapel Hill: John B. Neathery, 1861. [Title and publisher from front wrap.] 8vo. 34 pages. Original printed wraps, bound into dark blue library cloth with gilt spine lettering. Gilt call number on front cover and bookplate on front pastedown, but the only library marking on the pamphlet itself is a penciled call number on the verso of the front wrap (now erased, but leaving a faint impression on the recto). Otherwise near very good. Faint foxing to front wrap; moderate, mostly marginal foxing to first text leaf; a few light traces elsewhere. Leaves a little age-toned. Some very slight evidence of marginal damping. Two leaves with light creases. Second edition overall, but the FIRST CONFEDERATE EDITION. The true first edition was issued in Raleigh in 1859. The address recalls life at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the first decades of the 19th century. William Hooper (1792-1867) received his B.A. from U.N.C. in 1809 at the age of 17 and his M.A. in 1812. He later… Read More
