Original black cloth with gilt design of a graveyard cross set within a vignette border to front cover; gilt titles; 160pp; numerous unattributed story header vignettes and illustration to last page. Preface plus nine short stories, somewhat anticipating the 'fin-de-siecle' style of the 1890s. Bleiler harshly dismisses the collection as 'weak' but the title story is an excellent example of the decadent and moody gothic style. For health reasons a wealthy business magnate sells his company and purchases a country estate next what has now become the book-collecting epicentre of the UK, Hay-on-Wye, where he quickly becomes embroiled in strange goings-on. Scarce mystery novel by a relatively obscure publisher. Possible supernatural interest - there are early references to haunted rooms etc - but I suspect this is rationalised.... more information
