The Southern and Western Monthly Magazine and Review was popularly known as "Simms's Magazine" for its editor William Gilmore Simms, who took it on after withdrawing from The Magnolia. Though he championed a national literature, Simms was most interested in promoting Southern literature. "In Simms's view the Southern and western's nationalism and its sectionalism were in no way incompatible. Insisting that a truly national literature could be made up only `of the literature of distinct sections,' he dismissed charges of narrowness leveled at Southern magazines. "The Southern Literary Journal is the least known and least praised among Southern antebellum literary magazines... The Southern Literary Journal...was quite willing to be part of a `debating ground' for stating the South's positions. These issues include essays on medical jurisprudence, Italian poets of the eighteenth century, and a review of Harriet Martineau's Miscellanies, among many other items.
