Original 8vo blue-grey cloth with pictorial centerpiece.(light soiling to covers, else very nice) French served with a horse artillery battalion during the Mexican War and saw action in several engagements. Pages 140-302 are devoted to the Civil War, at the onset of which French was commissioned as a brigadier-general in the Confederate army. During the first couple of years he was assigned to supervise the coastal defense of North Carolina, culminating in his appointment on July, 17, 1862, as Commander of the Dept. of North Carolina and Southern Western Theater, where first he served under J. E. Johnston and later John Bell Hood. He describes engagements in which he participated and provides reports for others at which he was not present. Custer 176. Dornbusch II, 2742.
