A boy and his magician father are banished, but when the hungry monster Abiyoyo appears, it is the boy's ukulele playing and the father's magic that save the day.

A little girl imagines that she and her abuela (Spanish for "grandmother") can fly. The pair enjoy an aerial tour of their city, visiting people and sites important to the grandmother's past. The English text contains a few Spanish words and phrases. The colorful illustrations are mixed-media collages created with watercolors, pastels, inks, and cut paper.

Every morning a man named Albert wakes up and sticks his hand out his bedroom window to determine the weather and every morning he decides that it's either "too cold," "too damp," or "too breezy" to go outside. Then one day, as his hand is sticking out the window, a pair of birds build a nest on it and lays eggs. Unwilling to hurt the eggs, Albert keeps his hand out the window and holds the nest. As Albert guards the eggs, and later the newborn birds, he discovers that, just like the baby birds, he wants to spread his wings and explore the world. Colored pencil illustrations accompany the text. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2001.
