HISTORIC DOUBTS ON THE LIFE AND REIGN OF KING RICHARD THE THIRD

by WALPOLE, Horace

Book condition: Fine

Book Description

1768. Fine. WALPOLE, Horace. HISTORIC DOUBTS ON THE LIFE AND REIGN OF KING RICHARD THE THIRD. London: Printed for J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1768. First edition, with errata uncorrected. Two engraved plates. 4to.: [ii], [2], [iii]-xv, 134 pp. A fine copy of the text, but disbound. Book block is whole, but both boards are detached and most of the backstrip is missing. In this copy, the final leaf (printed with the Addition, and Errata with directions to the binder) has been moved from its customary position and bound-in immediately following the title-page. About this work, Hazen writes: "In his eager advocay of Richard, HW was a better apologist than historian; his belief (pp. 114-16) that Shakespeare's Winter's Tale is filled with references to Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII will perhaps suggest how his mind worked. But what he wrote he wrote well." (Hazen 19). This copy is offered as is.
