Frida A Biography of Frida Kahlo Unknown - 2002

by Herrera, Hayden.

About this book

This beautifully-illustrated and engrossing biography of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality and an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her own experiences. Born and brought up near Mexico City during the Mexican Revolution, she suffered a devastating accident aged eighteen, which left her crippled and unable to bear children. Her marriage to the muralist Diego Riviera was tempestuous, and she had many love affairs with men as diverse as Isamu Noguchi and Leon Trotsky. Absorbed in Mexican folklore and culture and a lover of dramatic spectacle, Kahlo's tumultuous life is that of an extraordinary twentieth-century woman.

From the publisher

Art critic Hayden Herrera's vivid biography of the great 20th-century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo will appeal to casual and professional art enthusiasts alike. Born in 1907 of a Mexican mother and a German father, Frida Kahlo's relatively short life (she died in 1954) was punctuated by the Mexican Revolution, a bout with polio, and a terrible bus accident during her teenage years. Pierced by a steel handrail, Kahlo underwent some 30 surgeries that failed to mend her, and spent much of her life bedridden. In response, she began to paint self-portraits with the aid of a mirror suspended above her bed. Herrera's biography chronicles and critiques her artistic development and invites us into Kahlo's fascinating circle of acquaintances, including husband Diego Rivera, Andre Breton, and Pablo Picasso.
