Summary
This autobiography from best-selling writer Isabel Allende begins in December 1991, during a period when Allende's daughter Paula became gravely ill and fell into a coma. The author began her account during the long hours at the hospital and decided to record the story of her family for her unconscious daughter in an attempt to "bring [her] back to life." As in her novels, Allende conjures up the magical and questions the gods. There are anecdotes of her youthful years, Chile's physical and political landscape, the military coup of 1973, and her family's exile.

"Within the first pages...Isabel Allende draws you into her world making each word intoxicating. With an open heart and soul, she leaves her print on our own hearts, sharing with us her daughter and finding solace through this journey of great loss. I will forever remember Paula, and am so intrigued with the person of Isabel Allende, that I have already read three of her books and am on my fourth.
I want to give equal credit to the work of the translator, Margaret Sayers Peden, who did an OUTSTANDING job in keeping true to the deep emotions Isabel Allende guided her readers through. Wow, what rare talent..both are true writers!"
Media Reviews
"Journalism was what Isabel Allende did in her freewheeling youth, before she discovered she could write novels....She does it wonderfully well. As Paula courageously reveals, she has everything it takes: the ear, the eye, the mind, the heart, the all-encompassing humanity." -- Suzanne Ruta
-- New York Times Book Review
"The book is so full of life that it sometimes is hard to remember that it is also full of losses."
-- Chicago Tribune
"...a painfully honest love story for a child that will bring tears to your eyes...Entirely without whimsy or sentiment...it is also the portrait of a modern mother...[Allende's] novels pale by comparison with this astonishingly revelatory piece of journalism. Here you will find concise and vivid portraits of Lebanon before Beirut blew up, of a Chilean childhood crossing the cordillera of the Andes, and of Columbia, where she was exiled...when the military junta took over Chile. Her account of that troubled time is brilliant..." -- Nonie Niesewand
-- Literary Review
"Allende writes here in the same style as she does in her novels: a narrative infused with magic and drama...She tells her family history alongside the history of Chile, the 'tragedy of her nation', and the years leading up to Pinochet's coup. Yet it is related at a great pace, almost like a medieval saga. This is as good as 'The House of the Spirits'..."
-- Good Book Guide
"...a memoir of devastating passion...'Paula', despite the title, is not a biography or even an account of the life of Isabel Allende's daughter. It is Allende's own autobiography, told to a daughter who has entered a limbo between life and death...The dying daughter becomes a mirror in which the mother reaffirms her reality and comes to terms with the decisions she has made as a woman and a writer...This unflinchingly honest self-portrait becomes Allende's parting gift to her daughter...it is a tribute to Allende's skill as a writer and the depth of her soul-searching that 'Paula', written on the eve of death, is immensely life-affirming. This is one of those unusual books about suffering that has no use for pity, that manages, somehow...to give much more to the reader than would have seemed possible...Embracing life and love with all her might, Allende honors the memory of Paula..." -- Ruth Behar

Publisher's Notes
One of the most popular and acclaimed of Latin American authors presents an unforgettable memoir. An exquisitely rendered, deeply moving mother-daughter story that doubles as Allende's autobiography, "Paula" is a prodigious evocation and a hymn to life, written from the heart.

Heading South, Looking North
by Ariel Dorfman
In this remarkable memoir, Dorfman describes an extraordinary life, torn between the United States, South America, and his Jewish heritage, between English and Spanish, between revolution and repression. Interwoven with the story of how Dorfman switched languages and countries -- not once, but three times -- is a day-to-day account of his multiple escapes from death during Pinochet's military takeover of Chile in 1973. Combining eight vignettes of his life before 1973 with eight scenes from the coup, Dorfman filters these events through an engaging, hybrid consciousness. A beautifully written and deeply moving autobiography by one of the "greatest living Latin American writers" (Newsweek), Heading South, Looking North is at once a vivid account of a life as complex and mysterious as the fictional characters Dorfman has created, and an enthralling search for a permanent home, a political cause, and a cultural identity.

Personal History
by Katharine Graham
Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for BiographyAn extraordinarily frank, honest, and generous book by one of Americas most famous and admired women, Personal History is, as its title suggests, a book composed of both personal memoir and history. It is the story of Grahams parents: the multimillionaire father who left private business and government service to buy and restore the down-and-out Washington Post, and the formidable, self-absorbed mother who was more interested in her political and charity work, and her passionate friendships with men like Thomas Mann and Adlai Stevenson, than in her children. It is the story of how The Washington Post struggled to succeed -- a fascinating and instructive business history as told from the inside (the paper has been run by Graham herself, her father, her husband, and now her son).It is the story of Phil Graham -- Kays brilliant, charismatic husband (he clerked for two Supreme Court justices) -- whose plunge into manic-depression, betrayal, and eventual suicide is movingly and charitably recounted. Best of all, it is the story of Kay Graham herself. She was brought up in a family of great wealth, yet she learned and understood nothing about money. She is half-Jewish, yet -- incredibly -- remained unaware of it for many years. She describes herself as having been naive and awkward, yet intelligent and energetic. She married a man she worshipped, and he fascinated and educated her, and then, in his illness, turned from her and abused her. This destruction of her confidence and happiness is a drama in itself, followed by the even more intense drama of her new life as the head of a great newspaper and a great company, a famous (and even feared) woman in her own right. Hers is a life that came into its own with a vengeance -- a success story on every level.Grahams book is populated with a cast of fascinating characters, from fifty years of presidents (and their wives), to Steichen, Brancusi, Felix Frankfurter, Warren Buffett (her great advisor and protector), Robert McNamara, George Schultz (her regular tennis partner), and, of course, the great names from the Post: Woodward, Bernstein, and Grahams editor/partner, Ben Bradlee. She writes of them, and of the most dramatic moments of her stewardship of the Post (including the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, and the pressmen's strike), with acuity, humor, and good judgment. Her book is about learning by doing, about growing and growing up, about Washington, and about a woman liberated by both circumstance and her own great strengths.
