Summary
The tale of one of the most influential country singers who ever lived is a compelling mix of triumph over adversity and defeat at the hands of deep-rooted family characteristics. Born into a poor Alabama family in 1923, Hiram Williams (he later changed his name to Hank) was probably afflicted with spina bifida from birth, and perhaps only drawn to music because his resulting frailty unsuited him for the other available occupations of farming or logging. Hank Williams began his professional career around 1937, getting his first breaks by entering talent shows in Alabama-eventually winning so many of them that he was requested to stay away. His journey from the music halls of the Deep South to a sordid death in the back of a car outside Oak Hill, West Virginia, and into country music legend, is related in stark detail in Colin Escott's meticulously researched and convincingly told story, HANK WILLIAMS: THE BIOGRAPHY, which not only lays to rest many old myths about the singer, but, controversially, is also unsparingly critical about what the author perceives as the venality displayed by many of those closest to him, including family members.

Cash
by Johnny Cash
He is "The Man in Black." Country music legend. The "quintessential American troubadour." An icon of rugged individualism, who's been to hell and back, and tells the tale as never before. In this unforgettable autobiography, Johnny Cash talks straight about the highs and lows, the struggles and hard-won triumphs, and the people who have shaped him. In his own words, Cash sets the record straight--and dispels a few myths--as he looks unsparingly at his remarkable life: from his turbulent past to the joys of the present to his plans down the road. Here, too, are the friends of a lifetime, including Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Dr. Billy Graham. As powerful and memorable as one of his classic songs, Cash is filled with the candor, wit, and wisdom of a man who has truly "walked the line."

Hank Williams, So Lonesome
by Bill Koon

Merle Haggard's My House of Memories
by Tom Carter
Free and easy the Hag's road has never been. Losing his father at age nine, he led an out-of-control youth capped by a stretch in San Quentin preceded by his first of five marriages. Toughing his way through the ranks of country music (starting with the dives of Bakerfield's notorious "Beer Can Hill"), he finally reached the #1 spot in 1966 with "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive." THE RUNNING KIND is named for one of his biggest hits. A period of great personal tribulation, the lasts two decades have also established Haggard's legendary status alongside such immortals as Willie Nelson and George Jones.

Heitor Villa-Lobos

Mozart
by Robert W. Gutman
This major work places Mozart's life and music in the context of the intellectual, political, and artistic currents of eighteenth-century Europe. Even as he delves into philosophic and aesthetic questions, Robert Gutman keeps in sight, clearly and firmly, the composer and his works. He discusses the major genres in which Mozart worked-chamber music; liturgical, theater, and keyboard compositions; concerto; symphony; opera; and oratorio. All of these riches unfold within the framework of the composer's brief but remarkable life. With Gutman's informed and sensitive handling, Mozart emerges in a light more luminous than in previous renderings. The composer was an affectionate and generous man to family and friends, self-deprecating, witty, winsome, but also an austere moralist, incisive and purposeful. Mozart is both an extraordinary portrait of a man in his time and a brilliant distillation of musical thought.
