Summary
In Waugh's scathing satire set in the fictional African kingdom of Azania, the young Emperor Seth-having discreetly assassinated his father and incarcerated his elder brother-has lately risen to the throne. Oxford-educated and conversant with the latest European trends of thought, Seth is determined to remake his impoverished tribal homeland into a modern and civilized nation. He meets with mixed success: His birth-control rally, for example, is interpreted as a fertility rite by his subjects, and acted upon accordingly. Inspired by Waugh's travels through Ethiopia in the 1930s, BLACK MISCHIEF is at once incisive and outrageous, and provides a fine example of the author's famously bitter wit.
