Summary

A collection of short stories set on an Earth-like planet in a utopian society based on the ancient homelands of the Kikuyu and Maasai peoples of Africa. Each of the stories is narrated by the spiritual leader of the community, a man who insists that there be no modern machinery or medicine in accordance with the old ways. The individual stories collected in this book have won a combined total of four awards and 10 nominations from various science fiction organizations, and the collection itself was received Japan's 1999 Seiun Award for Best Overseas Long Fiction.

Media Reviews

"Readers will be constrained to ask: Is this a genuine utopia tragically destroyed, or the impossible dream of a mulish old man who rejects even the possibility of change? It's thought-provoking, unquestionably, and Resnick's yarn-spinning is top-notch."

   -- Kirkus

"[T]he stories work well individually and collectively. They also work together to form a series of examinations of the value of tradition and faith, and the need for growth and change in human societies....I have little doubt that 'Kirinyaga' will prove to be one of the best collections of 1998."    -- Jonathan Strahan

   -- Locus

Publisher's Notes

Hailed for his grandeur of imagination and superb worldbuilding, winner of and nominee for more than fifty awards for his outstanding work, Mike Resnick has rightfully won a place as one of science fictions master storytellers. Now, in Kirinyaga, Resnick presents the haunting and utterly compelling tale of one mans utopia.By the twentieth second century in the African nation of Kenya, polluted cities sprawl up the flanks of sacred Mount Kirinyaga. Great animal herds are but distant memories. European crops now grow on the sweeping savannas. But Koriba, a distinguished, educated man of Kikuyu ancestry, knows that life was different for his people centuries ago--and he is determined to build a utopian colony, not on earth, but on the terraformed planetoid he proudly names Kirinyaga. As the mundumugu--witch doctor--Koriba leads the colonists. Reinstating the ancient customs and stringent laws of the Kikuyu people, he alone decides their fate. He must face many challenges to the struggling colonys survival: from a brilliant young girl whose radiant intellect could threaten their traditional ways to the interference of "Maintenance" which holds the power to revoke the colonys charter. All the while, only Koriba--unbeknownst to his people--maintains the computer link to the rest of humanity.Ironically, the Kirinyaga experiment threatens to collapse--not from violence or greed--but from humankinds insatiable desire for knowledge. The Kikuyu people can no more stand still in time than their planet can stop revolving around its sun.Deeply moving, swiftly paced, and profound in its implications, Kirinyaga is Mike Resnick's most triumphant work to date. His Fable of Utopia is the book every science fiction reader will want to own and savor for years to come.

The Renegades of Pern
by Anne McCaffrey

As long as the people of Pern could remember, the Holds had protected them from Thread, the deadly silver strands that fell from the sky. In exchange for sanctuary in the huge stone fortresses, the people tithed to their Lord Holders, who in turn supported the dragonriders, Pern's greatest weapon against Thread. But not everyone on Pern was protected. Some had been rendered holdless as punishment for wrongdoing. Some, like Jayge's trader clan, simply preferred the freedom of the roads to the security of a hold. Others, like Aramina's family, had lost their holds. And they all feared the outlaws who preyed on holds and holdless alike. The Lady Thella's renegades were the most dangerous yet--all they needed was Aramina, whose telepathic link with dragons could help them evade the dragonrider patrols. But Jayge was out to stop Thella. . . and he would never let her have Aramina!

But Jaxom knew better, knew he could teach his dragon to fly and to destroy the deadly silver Threads that fell from the sky. Disobeying all rules, Jaxom and Ruth trained in secret. their illicit flights seemed but a minor disobedience--until they found themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all!
