Summary
A road novel that follows two post-Vietnam losers travelling across the country with no particular destiny in sight. The unnamed narrator is a twentysomething fisherman who teams up with his buddy Tim (a Vietnam vet) and Tim's girlfriend Sylvia to drive west to the Grand Canyon, where they believe the government is about to build a dam. The trio plans to blow up the dam in an act of civil disobedience.

Media Reviews
"[If] the bankruptcy of American dreams, and the attempt to struggle for an inner meaning in the midst of chaos have become old hat in American fiction, this novel is nevertheless noteworthy, its characters are real, its language is genuine and poetic, and its themes are aesthetically embodied in, rather than painted onto, its 'Westward' plot. Harrison is a fine writer."
-- Choice
"The story is one of sexual frustration, drug psychosis, alcoholic dissipation, and inevitable disaster....Nevertheless, suitable for larger collections of modern American fiction." -- Patrick Fanning
-- Library Journal
"I found myself racing along, utterly caught up in the momentum of the story and eager to find out how it would turn out....Mr. Harrison's perceptions are jagged and cutting...a remarkably well-plotted story." -- Christopher Lehmann-Haupt
-- New York Times
"Jack Kerouac's highway hopes claimed by studded tires!...What amazes here is the fact that Harrison never lets up-from chemical high to emotional plunge, one disconnected cry after another. For those who enjoy driving without a steering wheel, this book is a must."

Publisher's Notes
Their plans were conceived in a drunken excitement and resulted in more horror than any of them could have imagined. There was the poet able to retreat into beatific reveries of superb fishing in cold, fast streams; the Vietnam vet consumed by uppers, downers and violence; and the girl who loved only one of them -- at first. With their ideals ostensibly in order, they set out from Florida to save the Grand Canyon from a dam they believed was being built. Along with the tapedeck for the car, the liquor and the drugs, there was also a case of dynamite.

The Hotel New Hampshire
by John Irving
"The first of my father's illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels." So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the myriad strange and wonderful times encountered by the family Berry. Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they "dream on" in a funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel.

Portnoy's Complaint
by Philip Roth
"Roth is the bravest writer in the United States. He's morally brave, he's politically brave. And Portnoy is part of that bravery." —Cynthia Ozick, Newsday "Deliciously funny...absurd and exuberant, wild and uproarious... a brilliantly vivid reading experience."-- New York Times Book Review "Simply one of the two or three funniest works in American fiction." — Chicago Sun-Times "Touching as well as hilariously lewd.... Roth is vibrantly talented...as marvelous a mimic and fantasist as has been produced by the most verbal group in human history." —Alfred Kazin, New York Review of Books From the Trade Paperback edition.

Fear of Flying
by Erica Jong
Now with a new introduction by the author, one of the most influential books ever on women's sexuality is ready to expose a new generation to a joyous, exhilarating romp through the mind of one about-to-become-liberated woman--and to an acceptance and enjoyment of their own innermost sexual fantasies.

Carry Me Home
by John M. Del Vecchio
Rare is the novel that speaks for an entire generation, that captures a pivotal moment in our lives, that sums up an era. CARRY ME HOME marks just such an accomplishment, an extraordinary achievement in the literature of our time. In his two previous novels, THE 13th VALLEY AND FOR THE SAKE OF ALL LIVING THINGS, John M. Del Vecchio brilliantly established himself as the premier voice of the Viet Nam experience. Now, in a powerful and poignant epic that places Del Vecchio in the top rank of American novelists, he transports the soldiers of that distant war to their final battlefield--the home front.
