Mother Teresa

Beyond the Image

Summary

Because there were at least 25 profiles of Mother Teresa already in print by the mid-90s, with all but a few unabashedly more hagiographical than biographical, author Anne Sebba originally envisioned this as a more critical look at her life and work that would go "Beyond the Image" (the book's original subtitle). By the time it was published in the month following Mother Teresa's death in September, 1997, both its focus and its subtitle had changed. Sebba's "Detailed, Up-to-Date Biography" (the revised subtitle), while still more critical than many (both her order's medical and fundraising practices and her own public stances on abortion and other social and political issues earn questionable marks), offers a more nuanced treatment than Christopher Hitchens's exuberantly critical effort, "Missionary Position", published in 1995 by Routledge. While Sebba's portrait (whose earlier book "Battling for News" chronicled women's entry into the rough-and-tumble world of British journalism) does not shrink from acknowledging her subject's flaws, she concludes that the full sum of Mother Teresa's contribution was immense.

Publisher's Notes

Mother Teresa of Calcutta--no figure alive today has received the adulation that she has, and she is frequently cited as the living embodiment of Christian kindness. Recipient of numerous humanitarian awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize, she had been characterized as a living saint and commands unrivaled international attention, even at the highest levels. Yet the respect she has received has not been unanimous, and since 1990 serious criticisms have been directed at this modern icon, who had once seemed beyond reproach. In this fascinating biography Anne Sebba reveals the truth behind Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity. She considers her attitudes toward abortion (women who have had abortions are hailed as murderers), rape (women who have been raped are given no help in terminating their pregnancy), her association with dictators such as the Duvaliers in Haiti, her medical negligence (inadequate use of painkillers, reuse of unsterilized needles), her ethics (she accepted hundreds of thousands of stolen dollars from S&L financier Charles Keating). Alongside these unflattering aspects, this work also considers the highlights of her dedication to the sick, dying and destitute, and looks at the motivation that drives Mother Teresa. Hers is an extraordinary life, full of paradox. She has enormous courage, love and determination, and her work poses some of the most profound questions of our age.

The Missionary Position
by Christopher Hitchens

In a searching examination of the Teresa cult, the author of "International Territory: The United Nations 1945-95" passes his final caustic judgement on Mother Teresa, reviewing her surrogate role as propagandist for the most extreme views, and concluding that she is "not" heaven's agent on Earth. "Hitchens argues his case with consummate style".--"New York Times". 20 illustrations.

A Simple Path
by Teresa

Now, in her own words, Mother Teresa shares the thoughts and experiences that have led her to do her extraordinary charitable work. A candid look at her everyday life - at the very simplicity and self-sacrifice that give her the strength to move mountains - A Simple Path gives voice to the remarkable spirit who has dedicated her life to the poorest among us. Just as important as her beliefs is how they are put into action in the world, and A Simple Path also tells the story of the founding of the Missionaries of Charity, their purpose and practice, and the results of their tireless work.

Mother Teresa
by Kathryn Spink

Regarded by millions as a contemporary saint, Mother Teresa of Calcutta dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor. She devoted herself to helping the dying, the destitute, lepers, AIDS victims, orphans and society's outcasts around the world because she saw in each person the humble face of God.Distinctively clad in her peasant's white sari with blue edging, she taught the possibility of joyful and selfless love. She always made clear that her work was driven by an absolute faith -- that she was simply responding to Christ's boundless love for her and for every man, woman and child on earth.During her lifetime, Mother Teresa resisted having her biography written in full. She thought that she and her story were not important and that what mattered was for people to help the poor, to promote peace and to love God. As she once wrote, "No one thinks of the pen while reading the letter. They only want to know the mind of the person who wrote the letter. That's exactly what I am in God's hand -- a little pencil. God is writing his love letter to the world in this way, through works of love."But Mother Teresa also realized that accounts of her life and views and of the work of her nuns and brothers could inspire others to share in their efforts, their joy and their faith. And that is why, in 1991, she gave permission to Katherine Spink, who had known Mother Teresa and been involved with her mission for 13 years, to proceed with a full account of her life. Mother Teresa instructed anyone involved in her work and around the world to cooperate with Kathryn Spink in every way that would promote the love of God in action. It was also understood that the book would be completed only after Mother Teresa's death. Thus, now the complete story of Mother Teresa -- from her childhood in the Balkans in a remarkably open-hearted and religious family to winning the Nobel Prize to fearlessly attending to the victims of war-torn Beirut and pleading with George Bush and Saddam Hussein to choose peace over war -- can finally be told by a wonderful writer whom she trusted as a longtime friend to her order and co-workers.
