Summary
In the aftermath of a tragedy, a young man named Jed Parry falls in love with Joe Rose, a science writer with a girlfriend he adores, and against all evidence insists that Joe loves him in return. Parry's obsession-a behavior pattern invented by McEwan, and called De Clérambault's Syndrome-becomes increasingly intense, culminating in what seems to be a murder attempt. A New York Times Notable Book for 1998.

Media Reviews
"What's striking about McEwan's later work-I'm thinking particularly of 'The Innocent,' 'Black Dogs,' and his new novel 'Enduring Love'-is its intimacy with evasion and failure, combined with an alert intelligence about these things which itself looks like grounds for hope." -- Michael Wood
-- London Review of Books
"As well as its excellent story, 'Enduring Love' is a worthwhile attempt to view the irrational through the lens of the rational. But it is weighed down by a surfeit of scientific information. As a result, I would now like to use these pages to call for an immediate, worldwide moratorium on novelists reading works of science." -- Cressida Connolly
-- Literary Review
"A sad, chilling, precise exploration of deranged love....In lesser hands, the story might be overwrought and unbelievable, but McEwan's terse, lucid prose and sure grasp of character give resonance to this superb anatomy of obsession and exploration of the mind under extreme circumstance. Painful and powerful work by one of England's best novelists."
-- Kirkus
"[V]ibrant and unsettling....Though it is a tour de force, McEwan's feat of creation and interpretation is finally less memorable in any of its specifics than is the mystery of Jed Parry and his syndrome....The deeper implications of McEwan's novel begin to reach us just when we want to believe that all erratic forms of behavior have been tagged and dealt with." -- Sven Birkerts
-- New York Times Book Review
"How the story plays itself out is too exciting to be spoiled by revealing what happens. Not only suspenseful, it is also thematically rich..." -- Christopher Lehmann-Haupt
-- New York Times
"'Enduring Love' gracefully bridges genres; it's a psychological thriller, a meditation on the narrative impulse, a novel of ideas. McEwan's prose is deft, unself-conscious and a joy to read. Here's a book that kept me up all night, mesmerized and entertained. So why am I ingrate enough to complain?...It's because 'Enduring Love' sometimes soars to such heights that I'm disappointed it didn't, in the end, reach greatness." -- Elizabeth Judd

Publisher's Notes
Science writer Joe Rose is spending a day in the country with his long-time lover, Clarissa, when he witnesses a tragic accident--a balloon with a boy trapped in it is being tossed by the wind, and, in an attempt to save the child, a man is killed. As though that isnt disturbing enough, a man named Jed Parry, who has joined Rose in helping to bring the balloon to safety, believes that something has passed between him and Rose--something that sparks in Parry a deranged, obsessive kind of love.Soon Parry is stalking Rose, who turns to science to try to understand the situation. Parry apparently suffers from a condition known to psychiatrists as de Clerambault Syndrome, in which the afflicted individual obsessively pursues the object of his desire until the frustrated love turns to hate and rage--transforming one of life's most valued experiences into pathological horror. As Rose grows more paranoid and terrified, as his treasured relationship with Clarissa breaks under the tension of his fear, Rose realizes that he needs to find something beyond the cold reasoning of science if this love is to be endured. With the cool brilliance and deep compassion that defined his best novels (The Comfort of Strangers, The Innocent), Ian McEwan has once again spun a tale of life intruded upon by shocks of violence-and discovered profound truths about the nature of love and the power of forgiveness.

The Captive and the Fugitive
by Marcel Proust
In The Captive, Proust's narrator is living with Albertine in his mother's Paris apartment. He is chronically concerned about who she may or may not love. In The Fugitive, Albertine is irretrievably lost to him, and he retreats to Venice, where he receives a telegram from Gilberte, Swann's red-haired daughter. Rich with irony, the story inspires meditations on desire, homosexuality, music, and the art of introspection. The final volume of a new, definitive text of A la recherche du temps perdu was published by the Bibliotheque de la Pleiade in 1989. For this authoritative English-language edition, D. J. Enright has revised the late Terence Kilmartin's acclaimed reworking of C. K. Scott Moncrieff's translation to take into account the new French editions.

Time Regained/a Guide to Proust
by Marcel Proust
The final volume of In Search of Lost Time chronicles the years of World War I, when, as M. de Charlus reflects on a moonlit walk, Paris threatens to become another Pompeii. Years later, after the war's end, Proust's narrator returns to Paris, where Mme. Verdurin has become the Princesse de Guermantes. He reflects on time, reality, jealousy, artistic creation, and the raw material for literature - his past life. This volume also includes the indispensable Guide to Proust, an index to all six volumes of the novel. The Hours
by Michael Cunningham
"The Hours" is the Story of Three Women: Clarissa Vaughan, a beloved friend of an ailing poet, who one fine New York morning goes about planning a party in his honor; Laura Brown, who in a 1950s Los Angeles suburb slowly begins to feel the constraints of a perfect family and home; and Virginia Woolf, who is recuperating with her husband in a London suburb, and beginning to write Mrs. Dalloway. By the end of the novel, the stories intertwine in remarkable ways, and finally come together in an act of subtle and haunting grace.
