A Pickpocket's Tale

The Underworld of Nineteenth-century New York

by Timothy J. Gilfoyle

ISBN: 0393061906
ISBN-13: 9780393061901
Format: Hardcover

Summary

Through the story of one pickpocket, George Appo, historian Timothy Gilfoyle uncovers New York City’s late 19th-century underworld, and in doing so renders a vivid canvas of the people, streets, and neighborhoods often neglected by historians. Starting off as a juvenile delinquent, Appo became an enterprising and energetic con man, who eventually ran up against the criminal justice system-and Gilfoyle makes it clear that the police, politicians, and jailers had their own agendas. This vivid social history from below is based on the record of Appo’s testimony in investigations into widespread police corruption.

Media Reviews

"[A] colorful, evocative social history."

"Authoritative, thoroughly researched, eye-opening and grand, good fun to read."

"[Gilfoyle] succeeds in constructing a grand narrative of New York gangs...."    -- Jim Rossi

"[Appo's] 99-page memoir, much of which is excerpted in A PICKPOCKET'S TALE is unsentimental, unapologetic and-in a refreshing departure from the norm-un-self-serving....Despite a Dickensian childhood, institutional sadism and bad luck, [Appo] remains honest, in his own way, and is rightly transformed into an American hero."    -- Tara McKelvey
