Summary

Best-selling author Bryce Proctorr is suffering from a serious case of writer's block. Fellow writer Wayne Prentice can't seem to give away his many well-thought out but unpopular novels. When Bryce offers Wayne half of his million-plus advance if he can put his celebrity name on Wayne's next novel, Wayne feels he has stumbled upon the deal of a lifetime. Things take a deadly turn, however, when Bryce finally comes up with the catch: Wayne must kill Bryce's distracting wife, Lucie. After much deliberation-and consultation with his own wife, Susan-Wayne decides to take Bryce up on his offer. Following Lucie's violent death, Wayne and Bryce reap the benefits of their betrayal-for a while. Soon, however, Bryce begins to lose himself in his obsession over Lucie's murder and is once again at a loss for words. Calling on Wayne to make another deal, one can only guess what the hook will be this time.

Media Reviews

"You'll want to turn the pages fast to keep up with the narrative hook, and when you get to the end, you'll find that it turns out to be just as sudden and deft as the beginning."    -- Eugen Weber

   -- Los Angeles Times

"Donald E. Westlake's new mystery is more than high concept; it is pretty much all concept, and its premise-that two authors might be crazy enough to commit murder for the sake of a book deal-may appeal to anyone who follows publishing. In the current conglomerate-induced state of paranoia, murderous thoughts are common."    -- Valerie Sayers

-- New York Times Book Review

"Who knew novelists could be so nasty? Sure, every once in a while, the leading lights of the literary world will engage in a public cat fight. But if the estimable Donald E. Westlake is to be believed, these same wordsmiths are capable of murder most foul as well."    -- Gary Dretzka

   -- Chicago Tribune Books
