A Novel

Summary

Alvarez's fourth novel begins in the 19th century and continues into the 20th, telling in alternating chapters the story of Salomé Ureña and her daughter, Camila. Salomé, who was once the fiery poet laureate of the Dominican Republic, gave up her career to raise her family, and died young of tuberculosis. Camila, who came of age and immigrated to America during World War II, was a professor at Vassar who had to reconcile her career with the early loss of her mother and her conflicted feelings about her homeland.

Media Reviews

"[R]estless and vibrant....These lives, gently told, have currents within them as wide and deep as an ocean's-and no one can miss their primal force."

   -- Kirkus

"This is Alvarez's most ambitious work to date. In fact, her subject...is so rich that she can't quite do it justice....[D]espite its precious, contrived moments, the book delivers a strong sense of who these people were."    -- Suzanne Ruta

Lost Man's River
by Peter Matthiessen

Peter Matthiessen is one of the few American writers ever nominated for the National Book Award for both fiction and nonfiction. When his novel Killing Mister Watson was published in 1990, the reviews were extraordinary. It was heralded as "a marvel of invention . . . a virtuoso performance" (The New York Times Book Review) and a "novel [that] stands with the best that our nation has produced as literature" (Los Angeles Times Book Review). Now Peter Matthiessen brings us the second novel in his Watson trilogy, a project that has been nearly twenty years in the writing. A story of epic scope and ambition, Lost Mans River confronts the primal relationship between a dangerous father and his desperate sons and the ways in which his death has shaped their lives. Lucius Watson is obsessed with learning the truth about his father. Who was E. J. Watson? Was he a devoted family man, an inspired farmer, a man of progress and vision? Or was he a cold-blooded murderer and amoral opportunist? Were his neighbors driven to kill him out of fear? Or was it envy? And if Watson was a killer, should the neighbors fear the obsessed Lucius when he returns to live among them and ask questions? The characters in this tale are men and women molded by the harsh elements of the Florida Everglades--an isolated breed, descendants of renegades and pioneers, who have only their grit, instinct, and tradition to wield against the obliterating forces of twentieth-century progress: Speck Daniels, moonshiner and alligator poacher turned gunrunner; Sally Brown, who struggles to escape the racism and shame of her local family; R. B. Collins, known as Chicken, crippled by drink and rage, who is the custodian of Watson secrets; Watson Dyer, the unacknowledged namesake with designs on the remote Watson homestead hidden in the wild rivers; and Henry Short, a black man and unwilling member of the group of armed island men who awaited E. J. Watson in the silent twilight. Only a storyteller of Peter Matthiessen's dazzling artistry could capture the beauty and strangeness of life on this lawless frontier while probing deeply into its underlying tragedy: the brutal destruction of the land in the name of progress, and the racism that infects the heart of New World history.

New York U. S. A.: Plume. As New 2001. Softcover. IS NEW; no names, not marked-in, underscored, clearance or discard. Mails from NYC usually within 12 hours. ; 7.8 x 5.3 x 0.8 inches; 353 pages; \nOnline Rev: It's 1960, and 65-year-old Camila Ureña decides to join the New World. Castro's new world, that is, which she has been following on the news with a heated excitement she hasn't felt for years. Forced into early retirement from her 20-year post as a Spanish teacher among the perky white girls of Vassar Coll, Camila faces a choice: whether to move to Florida & live down the block from her best friend or to fly over Florida & into Havana where her brothers live--& thereby land in a place of upheaval & hungry ghosts. The hungriest ghost of all is Camila's mother, Salomé Ureña, whose poems became inspirational anthems for a short-lived revolution in the late-19th-century Dominican Republic. Based in fact, In the Name of Salomé alternates between Camila's story & her mother's. Camila's chapters are written in the third person, Salomé's in the first. By calling Camila "she, " Alvarez alienates her within the text--as if in her attic at Vassar she is floating outside herself in an America that does not belong to her. In contrast, Salomé's chapters vibrate with life & tears & melodrama. Through the alternating voices, which Alvarez handles masterfully, the reader comes to grasp Camila's longing for the color & music of her mother's lost world--how the meek daughter wishes "she" could become the "I" of her mother's revolutionary & passionate life as a poet, which began under a pseudonym, Herminia, in a local political paper: Each time there was a new poem by Herminia in the paper, Mamá would close the front shutters of the house & read it in a whisper to the rest of us. She was delighted with the brave Herminia. I felt guilty keeping this secret from her, but I knew if I told her, all her joy would turn to worry. Yet for Salomé, her pseudonym allows her to become the voice of a country, "& with every link she cracked open for la patria, she was also setting me free. " --Emily White From Publishers Weekly The Dominican Republic's most famous poet & her daughter, a professor in the United States, are the remarkable protagonists of this lyrical work, one of the most moving political novels of the past half century. Camila Henr! Quez Ure$a is introduced as an "eminent Hispanicist, a woman with two doctorates [&] a tenured chair" at Vassar. She is also the exiled daughter of both renowned Dominican poet Salom Ure$a & the country's last democratically elected president. Born in 1850, Salom called a revolution into being with her fearless poetry. Even as an adolescent, she saw her pseudonymous poems inspire bloodshed in the streets. Camila, born in 1894, followed the fortunes of her famous family into exile, first in Cuba, then on her own in the U. S. , where she became an academic's academic. Alvarez, who has written more than once about women in exile (How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents) & women revolutionaries (In the Time of the Butterflies) , & who is herself a poet, academic & exile, has found in Salom & Camila Ure$a her best topic yet. The novel's protagonists are based on real characters, yet by offering history through the lenses of both the poet & the scholar, as well as by portraying male-dominated events from the perspective of female activists, Alvarez conveys purely Latin American revolutionary idealism with an intellectual sensuality that eschews magical realism. The narrative flows freely across time -Havana in 1935; Minnesota in 1918; Washington, DC, in 1923; Santa Domingo in the mid to late 19th century; Poughkeepsie in the 1950s- & is punctuated with letters & poetry. While Salom is the flame that heats this cauldron, Camila tends the fire. When she retires from teaching in 1960, she must choose a meaningful conclusion to her life. Her long-time love, Marion, though recently married, invites her to live nearby in Florida. But born & bred to revolution, Camila has been too long away from the fray. It is not giving away anything to say that she spends the next 13 years in Cuba, heeding the . (more information)
