Yours Is a Precious Witness
by Margherita Marchione
The fiftieth anniversary of World War II and the Holocaust inspired new memoirs, documentaries and historical studies, but few examined the hundreds of personal stories of Italians who tried to rescue Jewish people from certain death, and the important role played in those efforts by the Catholic Church, especially by Pope Pius XII and many parishes and religious orders of men and women. Mainly using untapped oral histories of Italian Jews and Catholics, this book shows that Catholics in Italy who saved Jews firmly believed they were doing so in consonance with the Pope's wishes. Readers will get to know these courageous individuals through their inspiring memoirs. Yours is a Precious Witness strives to draw a more personal portrait of Pius XII. He spoke loudly - not in words, which would have resulted in Nazi retaliations, but in actions that directly saved thousands of Jews. Convents, monasteries and papal buildings in Italy became havens for refugees.

Shattered!
by Felicia (Steigman) Carmelly
The fist expose in English about the Romanian and Transnistrian tragedy, and the post-war cover-up. Over 500,000 Jews were killed in the Romanian Holocaust, and their story has been one of obscurity in the history of World War II. This book fills a major historical gap in holocaust studies. The historical section of this book is based on research done by Jean Ancel and Dora Litani, pioneers in the history of the Romanian Holocaust. Includes survivors' personal testimonies, which demonstrate the annihilation, suffering and unspeakably traumatic experiences in Romania and Transnistria, but also allows us to witness their courage, faith and hope for the future. This book contains new revelations, from recently released Soviet documents and eyewitness testimonies. Beginning with a general geographic and historic backgournd from post-WWI, Shattered leads into WWII, with the Anti-Jewish Decrees and the deportations from Bucounia, Bessarabi, and other areas in Romania. All of tile different forces in Transnistria are explored, including the Germans, Romanians, Ukranian Militia, the fate of Romanian gypsies and the Jews from Transylvania. The second part of the book is personal, moving testimonies from the survivors.

We're Alive and Life Goes on
by Zaia Alexander
In 1941, 20-year-old Eva Mandlova arrived at the Nazi's "model" concentration camp, Theresienstadt. Experiencing moments of laughter and the most profound pain, Eva lost her closest relatives to the camps. Never before published, her diary shows the horror of Theresienstadt, where the relatively "good" conditions left the prisoners to make impossible moral choices every day.

The Holocaust, The French, and the Jews
Zuccotti, Susan
NY: BasicBooks/HarperCollins, 1993. (1st edition). Hardbound. NEAR FINE/Near Fine. Ex-library in mylar. As new except for expected library markings. DJ is unclipped. Despite the French Vichy regime's complicity in the roundup and deportation of Jews to Nazi death camps, roughly three-fourths of France's Jews, an estimated 250,000 people, survived. Zuccotti attributes their survival partly to "benign neglect"--the vast majority of French men and women kept silent, allowing Jews to remain in hiding or to cross borders. Many Jews in France with fake papers and ration cards survived by living quietly and taking odd jobs, abetted, according to Zuccotti, by the passive goodwill of hundreds of thousands of French men and women who simply went about their own business. Using a wealth of archival documents, the author chronicles the clandestine networks of Jewish rescue organizations, the heroic efforts of armed Jewish resistance groups and the assistance provided by non-Jews such as the 3000 residents of Le Chambon who hid some 5000 Jews in their homes. She also charts the treachery of Vichy politicians and of countless French collaborators who joined fascist leagues to hunt down resistants and Jews. ISBN: 0465030343.
