Summary
The heroine of Styron's novel is based on a Polish survivor of Auschwitz he knew when he lived in a Brooklyn rooming house in the late 1940s. The narrator-in the tradition of Fitzgerald's Nick Carraway in THE GREAT GATSBY-is Stingo, the young Southern writer who falls in love with Sophie, his upstairs neighbor, and tells her dramatic story and that of Nathan, the mad genius who loves her but is obsessed with the horrors of the Holocaust.

Portnoy's Complaint
by Philip Roth
"Roth is the bravest writer in the United States. He's morally brave, he's politically brave. And Portnoy is part of that bravery." —Cynthia Ozick, Newsday "Deliciously funny...absurd and exuberant, wild and uproarious... a brilliantly vivid reading experience."-- New York Times Book Review "Simply one of the two or three funniest works in American fiction." — Chicago Sun-Times "Touching as well as hilariously lewd.... Roth is vibrantly talented...as marvelous a mimic and fantasist as has been produced by the most verbal group in human history." —Alfred Kazin, New York Review of Books From the Trade Paperback edition.

Shadows of a Childhood
by Linda Coverdale
Elisabeth Gille was five years old when her mother, the Russian writer Irene Nemirovsky, was deported to Auschwitz at the height of her career and never seen again. Gille was hidden in the French countryside with her sister until the war was over. Shadows of a Childhood, winner of Elle's 1997 Grand Prix des Lectrices, is her story, a fictionalized account of one individual's - and one country's - coming to terms with the war.

From Bondage
by Henry Roth

Capturing the dizzying vitality of the 1920s and the literary world of Manhattan, Roth sets the stage for one of the most memorable literary romances of this century, the story of a young man's love affair with his professor.
