The World Economy
by Frederick P. Stutz
Provides a sound theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the global economy in an era of shifting borders, restructuring economies, and regional realignments. The book covers population, natural resources, and international trade. It combines theory with geography in addressing growth, distribution, and development, and to explain their impact on international business. Portrays recent geopolitical changes and uses real-world examples. Promotes a greater appreciation of international and U.S. economic issues through a global perspective while highlighting world trade. the fifth edition of World Economy: Resources, Location, Trade and Development has been revised to include a chapter on giant emerging markets and a half chapter on telecommunications and information technology. It emphasizes global interdependence; flexible manufacturing; the globalization of business, culture, environmental problems, and telecommunications; and the transnational corporation. It discusses the declining roles of traditional factors of production and provides the latest country-by-country economic data for all of the world's major economies.

The Commanding Heights
by Daniel Yergin
The Commanding Heights is about the most powerful political and economic force in the world today -- the epic struggle between government and the marketplace that has, over the last twenty years, turned the world upside down and dramatically transformed our lives. Now, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Prize joins with a leading expert on the new marketplace to explain the revolution in ideas that is reshaping the modern world. Written with the same sweeping narrative power that made The Prize an enormous success, The Commanding Heights provides the historical perspective, the global vision, and the insight to help us understand the tumult of the past half century. Trillions of dollars in assets and fundamental political power are changing hands as free markets wrest control from government of the "commanding heights" -- the dominant businesses and industries of the world economy. Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw demonstrate that words like "privatization" and "deregulation" are inadequate to describe the enormous upheaval that is unfolding before our eyes. Along with the creation of vast new wealth, the map of the global economy is being redrawn. Indeed, the very structure of society is changing. New markets and new opportunities have brought great new risks as well. How has all this come about? Who are the major figures behind it? How does it affect our lives? The collapse of the Soviet Union, the awesome rise of China, the awakening of India, economic revival in Latin America, the march toward the European Union -- all are a part of this political and economic revolution. Fiscal realities and financial markets are relentlessly propelling deregulation; achieving a new balance between government and marketplace will be the major political challenge in the coming years. Looking back, the authors describe how the old balance was overturned, and by whom. Looking forward, they explore these questions: Will the new balance prevail? Or does the free market contain the seeds of its own destruction? Will there be a backlash against any excesses of the free market? And finally, The Commanding Heights illuminates the five tests by which the success or failure of all these changes can be measured, and defines the key issues as we enter the twenty-first century. The Commanding Heights captures this revolution in ideas in riveting accounts of the history and the politics of the postwar years and compelling tales of the astute politicians, brilliant thinkers, and tenacious businessmen who brought these changes about. Margaret Thatcher, Donald Reagan, Deng Xiaoping, and Bill Clinton share the stage with the "Minister of Thought" Keith Joseph, the broommaker's son Domingo Cavallo, and Friedrich von Hayek, the Austrian economist who was determined to win the twenty-year "battle of ideas." It is a complex and wide-ranging story, and the authors tell it brilliantly, with a deep understanding of human character, making critically important ideas lucid and accessible. Written with unique access to many of the key players, The Commanding Heights, like no other book, brings us an understanding of the last half of the twentieth century -- and sheds a powerful light on what lies ahead in the twenty-first century.

One World, Ready or Not
by William Greider
The global economy is the leitmotif of the end of the twentieth century. Driven by the logic of modern capitalism, the global economy, a product of the Third Industrial Revolution, is a wondrous free-running system that is reordering the world as it transforms the lives and economic prospects of workers, corporations and nations. Having traveled the globe and talked to factory workers, corporate CEOs, economists and government officials, Greider contends that the global economy is sowing "creative destruction" everywhere: while making possible great accumulations of wealth, it is also reviving forms of human exploitation that characterized industry one hundred years ago and raising profound questions about the relevance of the nation-state in the face of impersonal market forces. Greider explains the dynamics of the global economy in terms of human struggle of diverse peoples and nations, rich and poor alike, facing a multiplicity of opportunities and dangers. As manufacturers in search of greater returns on investment move their assembly lines to low-wage countries, the globalization of industrial production is resulting in excess supplies of goods and labor, which, in turn, exert downward pressures on prices and wages. The deregulation of cross-border capital flows has opened new opportunities for currency traders while allowing unfettered speculation on a scale that can overwhelm the resources of even major governments. Meanwhile, the high interest rates that global investors charge to finance the growing debt of rich nations threaten the modern welfare state, with the attendant risks of class conflict and social chaos.

Why Economies Grow
by Jeffrey Madrick
The past two years have been an unhappy and uncertain time for the once-unstoppable U.S. economy. The dot-com bubble has burst, the major stock indexes have lost hundreds of billions of dollars of value, there is a crisis of confidence in corporate governance, and the economy as a whole is growing sluggishly if at all. These developments have many people asking questions they thought we'd already answered: What makes economies grow? How can we get ours healthy again? There are any number of one-dimensional answers to be had. Some focus on the national savings rate. Others take for granted that growth is driven by new technologies. In Why Economies Grow , New York Times columnist Jeff Madrick argues that these factors are not as dominant as many believe and all the emphasis they receive leads us to ignore other crucial factors. The most important of those neglected is the strength of market demand itself. The surprising thesis at the heart of this book is that the process of growth is far more complex than most pundits, business journalists, and even economists believe. But it can be understood. Madrick re-examines the 1990s in light of earlier booms, shows why technology did not give rise to a "new economy," and tells what we need to do to restore rapid growth to the U.S. economy. His original take on economic vitality, from the Middle Ages to the present, will surprise and inform everyone, and unsettle many. Avoiding the simplistic interpretations that now dominate economic discussion, Madrick proposes as economic agenda for the nation that is both historically well-founded and sharply different from the current one: an agenda that is led by government and that stresses the breadth and complexity of real growth.
