Social Policy
by

The Second Edition of this widely adopted text has been completely revised, to provide an up-to-date and accessible introduction to social policy. The text outlines the conceptual and analytical tools essential to the understanding and investigation of social policy in any society, enabling the student to engage with the theoretical debates surrounding the discipline. Social Policy introduces and reviews key theoretical approaches used in social policy analysis, considering competing interpretations based on social democracy; neo-liberalism and Marxism. It outlines radical critiques that address inequalities of gender, race, sexuality ad age in welfare provision, and goes on to examine the issues and debates of social justice, citizenship, poverty and universalism versus selectivism. Throughout there are a range of theoretical and practical tasks to aid the students. Social Policy is a core textbook for students of social policy and welfare in universities, colleges and professional training courses.

Another World Is Possible Ifa
by Susan George

An accessible, mo-holds-barred analysis of globalization, movements for social change and justice, and alternate strategies, from the author of the celebrated The Lugano Report and A Fate Worse Than Debt . Participants in the worldwide citizens’ movement for social change and global justice like to proclaim that “Another World Is Possible.” But is it? To this popular slogan, Susan George adds a cautionary “If,” and proposes how we can indeed reach that Other World. Shifting the balance of power in favor of citizens takes a hard-headed understanding of globalization, knowledge of the adversaries who prevent change, intelligent organization, and exciting yet practical proposals and strategic thinking. In clear and straightforward prose, drawing on her thirty years of scholarship in the service of social change as well as decades of participation in social movements, George cautions against pitfalls such as violence or basing one’s actions on all-too-common illusions. Whether you are a seasoned campaigner and confirmed “world-changer,” someone who wonders how you can join in the growing citizens’ movement, or someone who simply wants to know what this movement is about, this book is for you. You will discover that we are not condemned to glaring North-South inequalities, obscene wealth gaps, environmental destruction or inordinate power remaining in the hands of a small minority, if...

Reasons for Welfare
by Robert E. Goodin

Robert Goodin passionately and cogently defends the welfare state from current attacks by the New Right. But he contends that the welfare state finds false friends in those on the Old Left who would justify it as a hesitant first step toward some larger, ideally just form of society. Reasons for Welfare, in contrast, offers a defense of the minimal welfare state substantially independent of any such broader commitments, and at the same time better able to withstand challenges from the New Rights moralistic political economy. This defense of the existence of the welfare state is discussed, flanked by criticism of Old Left and New Right arguments that is both acute and devastating. In the author's view, the welfare state is best justified as a device for protecting needy--and hence vulnerable--members of society against the risk of exploitation by those possessing discretionary control over resources that they require. Its task is to protect the interests of those not in a position to protect themselves. Communitarian or egalitarian ideals may lead us to move beyond the welfare state as thus conceived and justified. Moving beyond it, however, does not invalidate the arguments for constantly maintaining at least the minimal protections necessary for vulnerable members of society.
