Summary
One of the unlikeliest outfits to emerge from the Detroit music scene over the last decade was the boy/girl duo of Jack and Meg White, better known as the White Stripes. Cannily pairing an intriguing publicity campaign (were they brother and sister, or ex-husband and wife?) with a deceptively primitive yet infectiously catchy, back-to-basics rock & roll sound, the band captured the American music-buying public's attention at the end of the 1990s. British music journalist Everett True's well-researched and insightful story of the Stripes and of their hometown's musical heritage recalls Detroit's mid-20th century status as the Paris of the U.S., with a flourishing musical community financed by the city's industrial base, and the later collapse of its infrastructure due to unemployment and the race riots of the mid-60s. Using interviews with Stripes singer Jack White as well as with members of other Detroit bands like the Dirtbombs and the Detroit Cobras, True explores the resurgence of the city's music scene, embodied in the White Stripes' musical development and increasing popularity.

When the Levee Breaks
by Andy Fyfe
Some albums are so extraordinary that they influence generations of aspiring artists, and even redefine entire genres. The Vinyl Frontier is a distinguished series of books that examine the making of these groundbreaking records. The first true rock gods, Led Zeppelin have always been shrouded in intrigue. Legendary tales of their debauched excesses, orgies, black magic, and satanic pacts threaten to eclipse their musical legacy. LED ZEPPELIN IV is the sound of a band at the height of their creative powers. A clever studio deal had afforded the band total artistic freedom to create an explosive and massive new sound, a heavy "sex groove" that would redefine rock music and create an entirely new genre. This compelling book is the remarkable story behind the writing and recording of one of the single most influential albums of all time.
