Summary
In this collection of essays, all previously published in magazines such as the New Yorker and Discover, neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky explores the complex influence of genes, environment, the body, and society upon the individual personality. To put forward his points, he uses a variety of compelling examples from human, primate, and other vertebrate behavior, including the mating choices of female baboons; why a quarrel continues even when one party accepts the other's apology; and the underpinnings of the bizarre and chilling disorder Munchausen's by Proxy, in which a mother deliberately makes her child ill in order to gain sympathy from medical professionals.

Media Reviews
"[W]ry, witty prose....Each essay brings its own unexpected delight, brief enough that you can dip a toe in, yet insightful enough to encourage you to pursue the topic further...." (starred review)
-- Publishers Weekly
"Ever entertaining, Sapolsky is always happy to explore such questions as at what age the window of receptivity shouts for, say, new music or a tongue stud or a genital ring. It isn't a radical notion that the nature-nurture debate ought to be tossed, but Sapolsky...has added another round to the cause of its demise." (starred review)
-- Kirkus
"In most cases, Sapolsky chases after answers to...[behavioral] puzzles with jovial abandon. But his very best essays have a more sober tone." -- James Shreeve
-- New York Times Book Review
