Closeted writing and lesbian and gay literature; classical, early modern, eighteenth-century
Robinson, David M
Ashgate Publishing Co., 2006. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. Robinson (English literature and lesbian and gay studies, U. of Arizona) examines the representation of female and male homosexuality in late sixteenth through mid-eighteenth century British and French poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction written in English, French, and Latin. His aim is to readdress closeted writing, largely dismissed in recent years, in addition to authorial intention. He notes that he does not provide a theory of early modern and eighteenth century homosexuality. Texts he considers, through historical context, close reading, and biographical criticism, are an anonymous verse prefacing Katherine Philip's Poems, Henriette de Castelnau's Les Memoires De Madame La Comtesse De M***, and John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. The second part addresses homophobic texts: Nicolas Chorier and Jean Nicolas's L'Academie des dames and Delarivier Manley's New Atalantis.
