Scenes from the End
by Frank E. Manuel
Frank E, Manuel was a 34-year-old intelligence officer during the final American push into Germany in the spring of 1945. Manuel's narrative begins at roughly the same time as the Battle of the Bulge and covers those last few months of World War II in Europe during which German forces engaged in futile but lethal maneuvers. Manuel distills the utter chaos and frequent absurdity of the war in its final hour and with his unique style achieves a spellbinding immediacy that transports the reader. His gripping scenes range from anonymous encounters with Holocaust survivors, their poignancy underscored by Manuel's own Jewish heritage, to interrogations of captured German officers to an unforgettable car ride with Admiral Horthy, Regent of Hungary, at a time when the Allies had not yet decided whether to regard him as a victim of circumstance or a major war criminal. "Military historians have assembled a picture of the grand design, creating the myth of an official history," Manuel writes, "but fragments may be closer to the chaos of experience in war before it has been subjected to cleansing."

Between Silk and Cyanide
by Leo Marks
As thrilling as a novel by John le Carré, this World War II memoir by ingenious cryptographer Leo Marks brings alive the codemakers and the agents they trained and communicated with in occupied Europe.

Pigboat 39
by Bobette Gugliotta

The Big Show
by Pierre Closterman
This is absolutely the best fighter pilot memoir of World War II. Pierre Closterman was a Free French fighter ace and his account of the air war over Britain and France has justly become famous. It contains everything one could wish for: wonderfully observed descriptions of wartime Britain, frighteningly evocative stories of in-the-cockpit action, an amazing cast of characters, and all the drama and bravery of a man fighting a desperate war thousands of feet above the ground. An undeniable classic and a true page-turner.

Hitler's Commander
by Steven H. Newton
The first English-language biography of one of Germany's top battlefield commanders-Hitler's favorite field marshal Field Marshal Walther Model (1891-1945) was an extremely capable and aggressive German commander who rose through the ranks of the Wehrmacht's high command during World War II. His expertise in rebuilding broken fronts earned him the nickname of the "Fuhrer's Fireman," and throughout the war, Hitler relied on the rapidly promoted general to save his army in several desperate situations, despite the fact that Model was often quite blunt with his erratic Fuhrer. Model's greatest achievement was the restoration of stability along the eastern front in June 1944. In August he was sent to restore the deteriorating western front, where he re-established a strong defensive line along the West Wall in September. He was second-in-command at the Battle of the Bulge and was leading the German army when it collapsed at the end of the war. Rather than surrender, he shot himself in April 1945. Although Model destroyed most of his personal papers just before he died, Stephen H. Newton draws on a wide variety of original German sources, including extensive Wehrmacht archival material, to tell the first and only authoritative story of the commander who was Hitler's favorite.
