The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind

by Mark A. Noll

ISBN: 0802841805
ISBN-13: 9780802841803
Format: Paperback

Summary

During the 18th century, American Evangelicals adopted the principles of inductive scientific methods to interpret Scripture. According to Noll, these methods of refined inquiry into the text of the Bible led to a dependence on literal interpretation rather than on larger Christian traditions. When the seismic wave of Darwin's evolutionary theories jarred early fundamentalist American Christians, crashing head-to-head with strict Biblical interpretation, they had only two choices: reject Darwin, or reject the Bible. They chose to reject Darwin, and have since then narrowed their intellectual scope still further. There is, Noll states, no fundamentalist Christian aesthetics, history, novel, sociology, philosophy. There is only the Bible. And that, Noll argues, leaves evangelicals singularly unprepared for future shocks to their world view.

Media Reviews

"Whether or not the reader shares [Noll's] hope or Noll's faith in general, they should not deprive themselves of reading this passionately argued book. Expecially if they have any interest in the current state of religion in America."    -- Peter J. Causton

Publisher's Notes

Mark Noll has written a major indictment of American evangelicalism. Reading this book, one wonders if the evangelical movement has pandered so much to American culture and tried to be so popular only to lose not only it's mind but it's soul as well. For evangelical pastors and parishoners alike, this is a must read! --Robert Wuthnow.

Mission in the New Testament
by

This book presents a comprehensive articulation of New Testament teachings on mission from a contemporary American evangelical standpoint. Mission in the New Testament contributes a fresh statement of the biblical foundations of mission, serving as a catalyst for completion of the church's universal mission in this generation. After investigating the historical background of the idea of mission in the Hebrew Scriptures, inter-testamental Judaism, the life of Jesus and the beginnings of the church, the book proceeds in a roughly canonical order through the New Testament. Essays analyze the works of Paul, the Synoptic gospels, Acts of the Apostles, the General Epistles, and the Book of Revelation. Well-versed in the historical-critical method of biblical interpretation, editors and contributors alike offer a cogent argument for recovering the "missional horizon" of the New Testament.

Ancient-Future Faith
by Robert Webber

[W]ho better than Bob Webber to help us rethink evangelicalism's place in a postmodern world?...The spirit of ANCIENT-FUTURE FAITH may be summed up in two statements from the book. First: "The most formidable challenge currently facing evangelicals is the shift from a modern to a postmodern worldview." In a world operating in the shadows cast by Derrida, Foucault, and Rorty, everything has changed. the Enlightenment has been "deconstructed" and found wanting. The modern period has been eclipsed and so, in turn, has the Christian faith once its "metanarrative" has been pluralized. Second: "The road to the future runs through the past." Faced with the modern-post-mpdern revolution, Webber proposes a dialogue between the two and counters with a creative calling to re-present a classical Christianity within the postmodern world. He contends that the faith of the early church provides a witness and an example of how the evangelical church can faithfully respond to today's culture. By suggesting a classical/postmodern dialogue in the areas of Christ, church, worship, spirituality, and mission, Webber shows the outworkings of a truly ancient-future faith.
