Wormholes
by John Fowles
A collection of the virtuoso nonfiction writings by one of our greatest contemporary storytellers. As a novelist, John Fowles needs no introduction. His popularity and his place in the English literary canon have been assured for several decades. His novels The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman became instant classics upon publication. But his nonfiction writings are less well known, in part because their appearance has been scattered in ephemeral periodicals, academic journals, or as forewords or introductions to other authors' work. Wormholes is the first representative gathering of Fowles's fugitive and intensely personal writings: essays, literary criticism, commentaries, autobiographical statements, memoirs, and musings. Wormholes is divided into four sections--Writing and the Self, Culture and Society, Literature and Literary Criticism, and Nature and the Nature of Nature; these thirty pieces, dating from 1963 to the present, range in length from a single page to substantial essays. Wormholes is a reflection of the writer's developing views on the art of fiction and on the relationship of literature to life and morality throughout the mature, fertile period of his career. Not only is it a rich mine of essays as art, it is also geography of the mind of one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century.

EARLY WRITINGS
Flaubert, Gustave
Lincoln. 1991. University Of Nebraska Press. 1st American Edition. Price Sticker Mark On Front Endpaper, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. Translated From The French & With An Introduction By Robert Griffin. pages: 275 pages. Cover: Cover design by Jungsun Whang. keywords: Literature Translated France . ISBN: 0803219822. Translated into English for the first time, the essays and tales in this collection represent about half of Gustave Flauberts initial experiments in writing. They rank among his best youthful fiction and foreshadow the techniques and ideas of his mature work. The eleven selections allow the reader to appreciate in perspective some of the comparable yet inimitable themes, character studies, and styles of writing that mark Flauberts major novels and stories. From the initial schoolboy sketches through Smarh, the more memorable writing of the young Flaubert reveals the eye of a precocious artist who surveyed the world primarily as material for fiction. His transference of this field of vision into language set the modern novel on a new course. Until he underwent a near-mystical attack of nerves in 1844, Flauberts life lacked the emotional trauma or material crisis that is often associated with the genesis of such great art. Unlike the destitute characters in A Fragrance to Smell, he inherited enough money to avoid the struggle with poverty that supposedly tempered the sensibility of Romantic souls. In assessing the prime influences that helped to shape Flauberts true sensibility, we should consign this myth to its Romantic origins and instead briefly mention at least three catalytic events and personalities in his emotional and intellectual development, beginning with his home life. keywords: Literature Translated France. inventory # 29493.
