Summary
Since 1960, in his various incarnations, the character known as James Bond has been involved onscreen with a variety of women, from the statuesque newcomer Ursula Andress in DR. NO, to 60-year-old Dame Judi Dench playing an elegant M in GOLDENEYE 33 years later, to a very 21st-century Halle Barry in DIE ANOTHER DAY. The "Bond girls" have encompassed many different types, ages, nationalities, ethnic groups, and attitudes; they include sexpots, villains, and a number of colorful (and usually outrageously bosomy) minor characters. In BOND GIRLS ARE FOREVER, the actress and filmmaker Maryam d'Abo (a Bond girl herself) and Bond expert John Cork have created a tribute to the women in 007's life, not only the ones he loved but the ones he hated. (Pussy Galore is here, but so is the sadistic Rosa Klebb.) This oversize volume is filled with gorgeous photographs-both color and black-and-white-depicting these lucky women in their onscreen roles, but it also offers, in their own words, their thoughts on the films, on feminism, on their own sexuality, and-perhaps most of all-on the glorious fun they had participating in these legendary entertainments.

Jane Austen in Hollywood
by
In 1995 and 1996 six film or television adaptations of Jane Austen's novels were produced -- an unprecedented number. More amazingly, all of them were critical and/or box office successes. What accounts for this explosion of interest? What changes were made to enhance the novels' appeal to a wide popular audience? And what do the changes reveal about our own culture and its values? These are the questions discussed in Jane Austen in Hollywood. Much of the appeal of these films lies in our nostalgic desires at the end of the millennium: a longing for an age of greater politeness and sexual reticence. Austen's ridicule of deceit and pretentiousness is also a factor. At the same time, however, these productions espouse explicitly twentieth-century feminist notions and reshape the Austenian hero to make him conform to modern expectations. Linda Troost and Sayre Greenfield have collected fourteen essays that examine the phenomenon of Jane Austen as cultural icon, providing thoughtful and sympathetic insights on the films through a variety of critical approaches. On the question of whether these productions enhance or undercut the subtle feminism that Austen promoted in her novels, the contributors differ markedly. From Persuasion to Pride and Prejudice, from the three Emmas (including Clueless) to Sense and Sensibility, these films succeed because they flatter our intelligence and education. They cater to our desire for a communal experience. And they have as much to tell us about ourselves as they do about the world of Jane Austen.

Complicated Women
by Mick Lasalle
Between 1929 and 1934, women in American cinema were modern! For five short years women in American cinema were modern! They took lovers, had babies out of wedlock, got rid of cheating husbands, enjoyed their sexuality, led unapologetic careers and, in general, acted the way many think women only acted after 1968. Before then, women on screen had come in two varieties - good or bad - sweet ingenue or vamp. Then two stars came along to blast away these common stereotypes. Garbo turned the femme fatale into a woman whose capacity for love and sacrifice made all other human emotions seem pale. Meanwhile, Norma Shearer succeeded in taking the ingenue to a place she'd never been: the bedroom. Garbo and Shearer took the stereotypes and made them complicated. In the wake of these complicated women came others, a deluge of indelible stars - Constance Bennett, Ruth Chatterton, Mae Clarke, Claudette Colbert, Marlene Dietrich, Kay Francis, Ann Harding, Jean Harlow, Miriam Hopkins, Dorothy Mackaill, Barbara Stanywyck, Mae West and Loretta Young all came into their own during the pre-Code era. These women pushed the limits and shaped their images along modern lines. Then, in July 1934, the draconian Production Code became the law in Hollywood and these modern women of the screen were banished, not to be seen again until the code was repealed three decades later. Mick LaSalle, film critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, takes readers on a tour of pre-Code films and reveals how this was the true golden age of women's films and how the movies of the pre-Code are still worth watching. The bold, pioneering and complicated women of the pre-Code era are about to take their place in the pantheon of film history, and America is about to reclaim a rich legacy.
