Summary
This pop-up book is the story of Italian Renaissance sculptor, engineer, and architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Brunelleschi developed the theory of perspective and designed the Cathedral of Florence. The cathedral remained unfinished for a number of years as no one knew how to construct the large dome indicated in Brunelleschi's plans. The cathedral and city of Florence had to wait for the return of Brunelleschi before the project could be completed.

The Good Nazi
by Albert Speer
In this hard-hitting biography - the first to be written free of Speer's personal influence - Dan van der Vat reveals Speer to have been a "good Nazi": a dedicated servant of the party who, as Adolf Hitler's brilliant minister of wartime production, was also its most resourceful problem solver. He was above all an opportunist, a charmer and persuader who worked the machinery of the Reich for his own gain. And, far from being a kind of German national penitent, he was, at Nuremberg, a masterly actor deceiving the world in the role of a lifetime. This book tells the story of Speer's rise to power, from his appointment by Hitler in 1933 as architect of a new Berlin to his capture by the Allies in 1945. It demonstrates how his organizational skills helped keep Germany fully armed, prolonging the war by at least a year - an achievement made possible by ruthless exploitation of slave labor. And, in the fullest and most incriminating account ever, we learn how Speer personally ordered the eviction of 75,000 Jews from Berlin - a crime he later covered up with lies, forged documents, and even legal action against biographical researchers.

The Forbidden Schoolhouse

A Library for Juana
by Pat Mora
Juana Inés was just a little girl in a village in Mexico when she decided that the thing she wanted most in the world was her very own collection of books, just like in her grandfather's library. When she found out that she could learn to read in school, she begged to go. And when she later discovered that only boys could attend university, she dressed like a boy to show her determination to attend. Word of her great intelligence soon spread, and eventually, Juana Inés was considered one of the best scholars in the Americas--something unheard of for a woman in the 17th century. Today, this important poet is revered throughout the world and her verse is memorized by schoolchildren all over Mexico.
