Literature and Society
by Pamela J. Annas
Organizes selections around five socially relevant themes -- Growing Up and Growing Older; Women and Men; Money and Work; Peace and War; and Varieties of Protest. Shows how literary technique serves larger purposes -- the recreation of experience, the exploration of ideas, the analysis of social issues -and how these larger purposes themselves shape literary form. Explains the ways in which literary form creates meaning, and provides a strong emphasis on writing about literature throughout, with a full chapter on all stages of the writing process -- generating ideas, developing a thesis, discovering a form, drafting, revising, and editing -- plus numerous excerpts from sample papers and journals. Now contains 42 new works, with more by Native American and Latino/Latina writers, as well as Bertolt Brecht's play Mother Courage and Shakespeare's Othello; also includes 18 works of nonfiction prose that have been chosen both for their literary technique as well as for their exploration of the five major themes.

Professional Correctness
by Stanley Eugene Fish
In "Professional Correctness" , Stanley Fish challenges both left and right-wing thinkers by directly attacking the notion that literary studies might engage and influence political issues. All the sniping over politically driven scholarship, he argues, isn't worth the ammunition; given the structure of both politics and the academy, literary scholarship simply will not reach an audience that might convert it into effective political action. Fish goes on to argue that academic literary scholars should not try to justify their profession by appealing to some larger goal, but should celebrate and extend the traditions of their craft, extolling the pleasures and challenges handed down by their predecessors.

Literature And Society
by Pamela J. Annas
Literature and Society An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, Nonfiction “The Editor’s purpose and approach seems to be similar to my goals in finding a text for an introductory literature classroom: having apparatus but not weaving it through the whole text, including depth and diversity of authors, using themes to guide students into the wonders of literature while making it easier to understand by (thematic) context. They also emphasize the connectedness between literature and culture, giving the text social and political dimensions that I value…” -- Elyce Rae Helford Middle Tennessee State University This thematic anthology features comprehensive writing coverage that highlights both the writing process and how to write about fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. It introduces and explains literature with reading selections centered on five enduring themes– Growing Up and Growing Older, Women and Men, Money and Work, Peace and War, and Varieties of Protest.
