Group Dynamics In Occupational Therapy
by Marilyn B. Cole

This book describes the seven-step method in leading a group, and teaches the reader how the traditional body of knowledge in group dynamics applies to occupational therapy. This edition includes information on co-leadership in today's practice, the pros and cons of its use, and how co-leadership can help therapists plan effectively and gain valuable feedback. Section Two, Group Guidelines From Seven Frames of Reference, has been greatly revised to reflect the latest in group dynamics. Marilyn B. Cole has dedicated an entire chapter to Allen's Cognitive Disabilities Groups because of its extensive development over the past decade. Chapter Five, The Behavioral Cognitive Continuum, represents an attempt to organize the many concepts and techniques occupational therapists use in group treatment, which relate to behavioral and cognitive theory. The chapter describing the Model of Human Occupation Approach has been revised to include new theoretical developments and research. Relational Psychoanalysis
by Lewis Aron
Over the course of the past 15 years, there has been a vast sea change in American psychoanalysis. It takes the form of a broad movement away from classical psychoanalytic theorizing grounded in Freud's drive theory toward models of mind and development grounded in object relations concepts. In clinical practice as well there has been a corresponding movement away from the classical principles of neutrality, abstinence, and anonymity toward an interactive vision of the analytic situation that places the analytic relationship, with its powerful, reciprocal affective currents, in the foreground. These developments have been evident in virtually all schools of psychoanalysis in America, from the most traditional to the most radical. The wellspring of these innovations is the work of a group of psychoanalysts who have struggled to integrate aspects of interpersonal psychoanalysis, various British object relations theories, and psychoanalytic feminism. Although not self-selected as a school, these theorists have generated a distinct tradition of psychoanalytic thought and clinical practice that has become extremely influential within psychoanalysis in the United States. Relational Psychoanalysis: The Emergence of a Tradition brings together for the first time the seminal papers of the major authors within this tradition. Each paper is accompanied by an introduction in which the editors place it in its historical context and by a new afterword in which the author suggests subsequent developments in his or her thinking. This book is an invaluable resource for any clinical practitioner, teacher, or student of psychoanalysis interested in exploring the exciting developments of recent years.

A Pragmatic Approach to Group Psychotherapy
by Henry I. Spitz
As group therapy nears its 100th anniversary and as we simultaneously approach the next century, this author team looks back on the past and present developments and identifies future trends. The emphasis of this text is to understand the advances which have taken place in group treatment over the years, regardless of what historical events created or influenced them, and to focus on what the clinical and research data has identified as reputable and beneficial forms of group psychotherapy. As the book's title implies, the primary concern is pragmatic and is geared to students and practitioners of group therapy who which to advance their existing base of knowledge and to enhance and broaden their leadership skills. In order to accomplish this goal, the text is designed to provide a brief historical context against which one can compare and contrast contemporary group methods and identify long-standing trends in the group field. This will be followed by an overview of the basic principles of group treatment with specific reference to leadership and membership issues involved in clinical decision making and choice of group interventions selected. The focus in the latter part of the text will be on the newer uses of group and an in-depth discussion of the theory, structure, and practice of these innovative group formats. Selected forms of group therapy which are unique, underemphasized in the group literature, and which demonstrate creative adaptation of traditional group theory and technique will form the focal points for this section. The text concludes with some speculation about groups of the future and about further applications of group treatment to meet the needs of people in arapidly changing world.
