Summary
Jacobo the master santero (wooden saint carver) instructs his 10-year-old grandson in the trade. A blizzard strands a sick neighbor, and that night Jacobo fitfully dreams that the saint he just carved plows the road with a pair of oxen and assistance from a solicitous angel. Miraculously, the road has been plowed when he steps out upon awakening. An ambulance rescues the deathly ill friend while the parents of the boy arrive to spend Christmas after all, thanks to the mysterious snow removal. The story is told in both English and Spanish, displayed side by side, and the Spanish words in the English version appear in a glossary. Woodcut-style paintings accompany the text.
