Summary

OFF SEASON: THE UNEXPURGATED EDITION is one of the most graphic horror novels ever written. Originally published in a heavily edited version (in 1981), this book was nonetheless extremely influential to creation of the splatterpunk movement of the 1980s. Focusing on a group of young adults on vacation in the Maine wilderness besieged by cannibals, this is a razor-sharp study of human emotion and response 'in extremis.'

Haunted
by Chuck Palahniuk

HAUNTED is a novel made up of stories: twenty-three of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter—sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined "Artists' Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months" and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of "real life" that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them. But "here" turns out to be a cavernous and ornate old theater where they are utterly isolated from the outside world—and where heat and power and, most important, food are in increasingly short supply. And the more desperate the circumstances become, the more desperate the stories they tell—and the more devious their machinations become to make themselves the hero of the inevitable play/movie/nonfiction blockbuster that will certainly be made from their plight. HAUNTED is at one level a satire of reality television— The Real World meets Alive . It draws from a great literary tradition— The Canterbury Tales , The Decameron , the English storytellers in the Villa Diodati who produced, among other works, Frankenstein —to tell an utterly contemporary tale of people desperate that their story be told at any cost. Appallingly entertaining, HAUNTED is Chuck Palahniuk at his finest—which means his most extreme and his most provocative.

Richard Mayhew is a young businessman with a good heart and a dull job. 21) Off Season Jack Ketchum first edition 1st
Jack Ketchum

Leisure, 2006-05-30. First Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. First edition of Ketchum's first book. This is the promotional Edition published by Ballantine Books in January 1981. The cover art features a black background and a woman's severed arm trailing blood. It's pretty gruesome. A red warning inset proclaims: Warning, this book contains scenes that may be too graphically realistic for some readers. The book is square, sharp, and tight. Rock solid binding. Square spine. The black background shows rubbing and shelf wear and remains glossy. Traces of edge wear, a bit of chipping at corners. A couple of pressure marks on front. Overall, this copy presents just wonderfully. Spine looks like the book has never been read. Comes stored in a crystal clear, archival grade mylar book bag. According to Ketchum: "OFF SEASON made my reputation and tanked me at the same time. Readers mostly seemed to love it or hate it, one or the other, which was exactly the reaction I'd hoped for. But the distribution staff of Ballantine despised it to a man, said it was pure violent pornography, didn't want a thing to do with it, and basically boycotted the book. The Village Voice and others heartily concurred. It sold out its initial 400,000 copy print-run strictly by word of mouth only." ------ That first edition is highly collectible, but at 400,000 copies, it's not particulary rare. This advance copy with the alternate cover art is THE true first edition of Ketchum's first book. (more information)
