After Liberalism
by Paul Edward Gottfried
In this trenchant challenge to social engineering, Paul Gottfried analyzes a patricide: the slaying of nineteenth-century liberalism by the managerial state. Many people, of course, realize that liberalism no longer connotes distributed powers and bourgeois moral standards, the need to protect civil society from an encroaching state, or the virtures of vigorous self-government. Many also know that today's "liberals" have far different goals from those of their predecessors, aiming as they do largely to combat prejudice, to provide social services and welfare benefits, and to defend expressive and "lifestyle" freedoms. Paul Gottfried does more than analyze these historical facts, however. He builds on them to show why it matters that the managerial state has replaced traditional liberalism: the new regimes of social engineers, he maintains, are elitists, and their rule is consensual only in the sense that it is unopposed by any widespread organized opposition.

Reasons for Welfare
by Robert E. Goodin
Robert Goodin passionately and cogently defends the welfare state from current attacks by the New Right. But he contends that the welfare state finds false friends in those on the Old Left who would justify it as a hesitant first step toward some larger, ideally just form of society. Reasons for Welfare, in contrast, offers a defense of the minimal welfare state substantially independent of any such broader commitments, and at the same time better able to withstand challenges from the New Rights moralistic political economy. This defense of the existence of the welfare state is discussed, flanked by criticism of Old Left and New Right arguments that is both acute and devastating. In the author's view, the welfare state is best justified as a device for protecting needy--and hence vulnerable--members of society against the risk of exploitation by those possessing discretionary control over resources that they require. Its task is to protect the interests of those not in a position to protect themselves. Communitarian or egalitarian ideals may lead us to move beyond the welfare state as thus conceived and justified. Moving beyond it, however, does not invalidate the arguments for constantly maintaining at least the minimal protections necessary for vulnerable members of society.

American-British-Canadian Intelligence Relations, 1939-2000
by
During the second half of the 20th century, intelligence co-operation between the three North Atlantic powers of America, Britain and Canada played a vital role in Western struggles against Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, Soviet Russia and their lesser allies. As demonstrated in the case studies in this volume, World War II cemented loose and often informal inter-allied agreements on security intelligence that had preceded it, and created new and important areas of close and formal co-operation in such areas as codebreaking and foreign intelligence. But what was the true nature of this co-operation? Wartime myths have obscured much of the rality, and while the western powers undoubtedly benefited from the dividends of these agreements during the Cold War that followed, they also experienced restrictions on national sovereignty whose costs have often caused controversy, while the search for co-operation frequently provided cause for friction.

Social Policy
by
The Second Edition of this widely adopted text has been completely revised, to provide an up-to-date and accessible introduction to social policy. The text outlines the conceptual and analytical tools essential to the understanding and investigation of social policy in any society, enabling the student to engage with the theoretical debates surrounding the discipline. Social Policy introduces and reviews key theoretical approaches used in social policy analysis, considering competing interpretations based on social democracy; neo-liberalism and Marxism. It outlines radical critiques that address inequalities of gender, race, sexuality ad age in welfare provision, and goes on to examine the issues and debates of social justice, citizenship, poverty and universalism versus selectivism. Throughout there are a range of theoretical and practical tasks to aid the students. Social Policy is a core textbook for students of social policy and welfare in universities, colleges and professional training courses.

In our hands; a plan to replace the welfare state
Murray, Charles A
AEI Press, 2006. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. Murray (American Enterprise Institute) argues that the welfare state as we know it cannot survive and that change is inevitable. He proposes the elimination of all income transfer programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and corporate subsidies, at the federal, state and local levels. Instead he would substitute, for all Americans over the age of twenty-one, an annual cash grant of $10,000 for life. Murray argues that such a plan would confer personal accountability and empower people to control their own lives by giving them the resources for a decent standard of living, including money to pay for healthcare and save for retirement. He concludes that regardless of the transition costs, switching to his plan would save the government $1 trillion a year by 2008. (©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) ( more information)
