Publisher's Notes
With nearly one thousand commission executed between 1879 and 1912, McKim, Mead & White was the architectural firm of choice for the most prestigious projects of the era, including the redesign of the White House and the Mall in Washington, D.C., and the campuses of Harvard and Columbia Universities. Among its residential clients were many of the most powerful figures of the Gilded Age--Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Pulitzers whom the firm built splendid summer cottages in Newport and throughout Long Island and the Hudson Valley and sumptuous town houses in Boston, Washington, Baltimore, and New York.

The Colonial Revival House
by Richard Guy Wilson
Celebrates early American house forms from the late nineteenth century, documenting each style's application in commercial and government structures as well as suburban homes, in a tour of forty sample houses that covers historical and regional information, as well as the contributions of top style architects.

Contemporary California Houses
by James Steele
Frank Gehry's Schnabel House, the Lawson-Westen House by Eric Owen Moss and the Drager House by the late Franklin D Israel are three key buildings in the development of a recognized style of Californian residential architecture. The houses perpetuate the Los Angeles tradition -- accomplished and exuberant, they are characterized by shifts in geometry, frequent use of utilitarian materials and subtle subdivisions. Complex enough to be confusing at first glance, these exhilarating designs blur the distinction between art and architecture and helped to establish their architects as masters of spatial manipulation.

Prairie Houses
by Abby Moor
With their bright and open spaces, in low buildings that bland with the landscape, Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie house designs altered the course of 20th Century architecture--and established a true American style. Many of these beautiful structures, found in Oak Park and River Forest, have now become registered National Historic Landmarks. They include small houses and mansions, churches and government buildings, gas stations and bridges. And Wright thought not only of the building itself, but of the interior design: he, himself, often chose or created the furniture, glass, fabrics, and other accessories that pulled everything together. First among these masterpieces was the Ward Willits House (and gardener's cottage), built in Highland Park, Illinois in 1902. Another piece de resistance, recognized as the epitome of the form: Chicago's exquisite Robie House (1909). Also included are the Johnson "Wingspread," Petit Memorial Chapel, and other major homes built from 1901-1937--so you can see how Wright's work evolved through time.
