In Search of Elegance: Towards an Architecture of SatisfactionÊ
Lincourt Michel
Liverpool University Press 1999. Fine in publishers decorated wrappers. 448pp. Illustrated. 1st edition.409pp. Illustrated. This text attempts to answer complex questions such as "What is architecture?" and "How is it judged?". In doing so, it develops a new theory for the practice of architecture and urban design. Michel Lincourt calls for a dignified architecture centred around the concept of elegance, that should provide satisfaction both to its users and surrounding society. Elegance, defined as the symbiosis of excellence and magnificence, is the ultimate attribute of any creative endeavour and achieving it is the architect's prime motivation. Using the concept of elegance, Lincourt develops a set of archetypes for designing a more satisfactory architecture and provides an in-depth analysis of three examples of architectural elegance: the Palais-Royal and the Foundation Rothschild Workers' Residence in Paris, and the Municipality of Outrement in Montreal. Learning from Other Worlds: Estrangement, Cognition & the Politics of Science Fiction & Utopia (Qty: 3)
LINCOURT
10-1. Brand new. The title of this volume attempts to convey the essence of 'cognitive estrangement' in relation to SF and utopia: that by imagining strange worlds we learn to see our own world in a new perspective. The cognitive and political dimension of science-fictional estrangement raises the perennial question, debated or touched upon in most essays in the book, of the relationship between imaginative invention and allegory or fable.
