Enlightenment and Pathology
by Anne C. Vila
In Enlightenment and Pathology Anne Vila surveys the various understandings of sensibility that passed back and forth between different professional modes of discourse in eighteenth-century France. The thrills of the nervous system, the delectations of taste, and the pangs of the heart mattered as much in the laboratory as in literature. Vila shows that the multiple junctures between the body and the mind promoted a steady commerce between science and the salons. Vila looks deeply into that commerce and its changing purposes in the course of the eighteenth century. She examines key works by influential authors—Diderot, Rousseau, de Laclos, Sade—to determine the significance of the sentimentality which they both absorbed and helped to define. But she also steps beyond belles lettres and investigates the medical, biological, and philosophical literature of the period to reveal deep and continuous interrelations. If moods are as contagious as colds, and wickedness is as debilitating as a bad diet, the inquiries of the eighteenth century still have much to tell.

Best Dressed
by Haugland. H. Kristina
A dazzling tour of selected highlights from the Philadelphia Museum of Art's collection of fashionable dresses beginning with several masterpieces by the father of haute couture, Charles Frederick Worth, most of which were made for and owned (or yearned after) by American women. The first garments collected by the museum after its founding in 1876 provided early costume historians with a rich resource for the study of historic American dress, and with the opening of the first costume galleries under the sponsorship of the Fashion group of Philadelphia in 1947, the collection expanded its focus to include fine examples of contemporary design as well.

Pataphysician's Library : An Exploration of Alfred Jarry's `Livres pairs' (Qty: 3)
FISHER
30-0. Brand new. The Pataphysician2s Library is a study of aspects of 1890s French literature, with specific reference to the traditions of Symbolism and Decadence. Its main focus is Alfred Jarry, who has proved, perhaps surprisingly, to be one of the more durable fin-de-si8cle authors. The originality of this study lies in its use of the enigmatic list of books termed the livres pairs, which appears in Jarry2s 1898 novel Gestes et Opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien, his best-known prose work. The greatest interest of the livres pairs lies in a group of works by Jarry2s friends and contemporaries, primarily Leon Bloy, Georges Darien, Gustave Kahn, Catulle Mendes, Josephin Madan, Rachilde, and Henri de Regnier. Several of these authors feature as the lords of islands visited by the pataphysician Dr Faustroll in his curious voyage around Paris. In conjunction with Jarry2s own works, the contemporary livres pairs serve to illustrate the vibrant and experimental atmosphere in which these authors worked.
