Publisher's Notes
Poetics of the Pretext is an original study of the French poet Lautreamont (1846-70), who was rediscovered by the Surrealists in the 1920s and promoted to the vanguard of theoretical debate by the "Telquelists" of the 1960s, but whose work has remained largely ignored or misinterpreted beyond a small circle of enthusiasts. Poetics of the Pretext closely analyzes the texts, pretexts, and intertexts of this innovative poet, bringing "Les Chants de Maldoror" and "Poesies" to the foreground of contemporary critical debates concerning poetics, genre, intertextuality, and influence. The volume also includes a detailed discussion of Lautreamont's plagiarisms, several of which are exposed and analyzed here for the first time. This book is a major contribution to the understanding not only of the work of Lautreamont, but also to originality, imitation, and plagiarism as evidenced in the nineteenth century.

Narratology
by Mieke Bal
Since its first publication in English in 1985, Mieke Bal's "Narratology" has become a classic introduction to the major elements comprising a comprehensive theory of narrative texts. In this second edition Professor Bal broadens the spectrum of her theoretical model, updating the chapters on literary narrative and adding new examples from outside of the field of literary studies. Some specific additions include discussions on dialogue in narrative, translation as transformation (including intermedia translation), intertextuality, interdiscursivity, and the place of the subject in narratology. Two new chapters, one on visualization and visual narrative with examples from art and film and the other an examination of anthropological views of narrative, lead Bal to conclude with a re-evaluation of narratology in light of its applications outside the realm of the literary.
