LADY BUTLER: BATTLE ARTIST: 1846-1933
Underwood, Paul and Jenny Spencer-Smith
Gloucester/London: Alan Sutton Publishing/National Army Museum, 1987. 192 pages, slightly oversize quality trade paperback with a photo-illustrated frontispiece ("Lady Butler painting at Dover Castle, 1898."). The book includes a lot of Lady Butler's excellent artwork (one large section in color), quite a few pictures, a Chronology of her life and an Index. "Elizabeth Thompson, later Lady Butler, was a phenomenon of nineteenth century British art. Though she herself never witnessed war at first hand, her battle scenes won her a popularity and critical success which no other British woman painter has ever approached. They also succeed in reviving British battle painting and in establishing its typical forms for a generation, so much so that it would not be an exaggeration to say that the standard representation of the ordinary British soldier in the period leading up to the First World War, as the perfect embodiment of stoic virtue, even in the midst of danger and adversity, is largely her invention." The book is as new with NO previous owner's signature/bookplate/highlighting/underlining/notes/stamps. NOT an ex-library, NOT a book club, NOT a remainder. Fine.. 1st Edition, 1st Printing. Trade Paperback. Fine. ( more information)
