Summary

Chandler's most famous protagonist, private detective Philip Marlowe, appears in this first novel, "The Big Sleep". Drawn from Arthurian legend, Marlowe is a modern knight, dedicated to causes greater than himself and to restoring order in the world. Marlowe's first priority is always his client. He is also wary of the authorities, although Chandler takes a more benevolent view of the police than do others in the noir genre. In this novel, Marlowe must discover what has happened to Rusty Regan, the beloved son-in-law of Marlowe's client General Sternwood. This book was originally published in 1939. In "Farewell, My Lovely", the second Philip Marlowe novel, the detective is more fleshed-out and well-drawn. Chandler expanded Marlowe's trademark irreverence and wise-guy remarks. Taking on the case of Moose Malloy, wrongly imprisoned for robbery, Marlowe must find Malloy's love Velma, who disappeared when Malloy was imprisoned eight years before. Also Marlowe must come to terms with his feelings for Anne Riordan, who is assisting him with the case.

8) The Big Sleep
Raymond Chandler

San Francisco: North Point Press, 1989. The Arion Press produce superb and very costly special editions; they win awards, deservedly so, for the care thay take when matching text and illustrations. They also produce, under their North Point imprint, a select series of more simply produced editions of some popular modern works in an unlimited form. This is the first impression of one of those projects. As Auden said, No survey of American Literature should ignore Raymond Chandler, and this edition will be a major one of this great novel for the collector. It is beautifully printed on fine paper, a long way from the pulp stuff used on the novel's very costly first edition of 1939. The binding is - I think - a black linen over boards. The title is silver blocked on the spine. The jacket is protected and consists of a monochrome photograph set upon a silver background, with the titling in a black Deco typeface, entirely appropriate for the period setting of the book. But the chief reason for making this a collectable issue for the Chandler enthusiast is the series of black and white photographs by Lou Stouman, which were specially created for this North Press edition. There are 40 of them, interspersed in the text. A superb and satisfying first edition thus for anyone interested in this great writer.. ISBN: 0865474028. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Lou Stoumen. (more information)
