Summary
THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV states and exemplifies Dostoevsky's most urgent concerns as a writer: the struggle between faith and the lack of it, the nature of love and hate, the question of God's existence, and generational conflict. The latter is represented in his novel by the father, Fyodor Karamazov, and his four very different sons: the saintly Alyosha, passionately sensual Dmitri, Ivan the intellectual, and the repulsive bastard son, Smerdyakov, who eventually becomes the murderer of his cruel father. All four sons, however, hate him, and the question of guilt is ambiguous. It has been theorized that Dostoyevski's hatred for his own father was the springboard for this examination of patricide and guilt.

Publisher's Notes
A masterpiece of world literature, in a bold new translation that makes no attempt to smooth out the rough diction, hesitations, or double-takes in the Russian--linguistic traits essential to the integrity and life of this text that is truer to the original than any other ever produced.

The Idiot
by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
'The chief thing is that they all need him' -thus Dostoyevsky described Prince Myshkin, the hero of perhaps his most remarkable novel. As the still, radiant center of a plot whose turbulent action is extraordinary even for Dostoyevsky, Myshkin succeeds in dominating through sheer force a personality a cast of characters who vividly and violently embody the passions and conflicts of the 19th century Russia.

The Brothers Karamazov
Dostoevsky,Fyodor
San Francisco: North Point Press, 1990. BCE. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Book Club Edition. The text is clean and unmarked. The binding is sound and square, with a slight crease to the spine due to the weight of the text block. The dust jacket shows a small bit of handling, with one small point of loss along the top edge where the front panel folds into the spine. It is now wrapped in an archival grade Brodart sleeve, and it displays well. A very good copy of the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. ( more information)
