Global Spin
by Sharon Beder

Global Spin reveals the sophisticated techniques used by powerful conservative forces to change the way the public and politicians think about the environment. Large corporations are using their influence to reshape public opinion, to weaken gains made by environmentalists, and to turn politicians against improved environmental laws. The corporations' techniques include employing specialized public relations firms to set up front groups that promote the corporate agenda while posing as public-interest groups; creating "astroturf" -- artificially created grassroots support for corporate causes; deterring public involvement by imposing SLAPPS (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation); getting corporate-based "environmental education" materials into schools; and funding conservative think-tanks, which cast doubt on environmental problems and oppose stricter environmental regulations. In the media, corporate advertising and sponsorship affect the content of news programs, and industry-funded scientists are presented as independent experts. In stores, "green marketing" (sometimes called "greenwashing") tries to persuade consumers that corporations are addressing serious environmental problems. Global Spin is the first book to document in detail how corporations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia manipulate the international debate to obscure their role in causing and prolonging our environmental crisis. While certain to be controversial, the book is so deeply researched and well-written that few will be able to dismiss its troubling insights.

Eco-Economy
by Lester R. Brown

Lester Brown, "the guru of the global environmental movement" ( The Telegraph of Calcutta), argues that, like the Sumerian and Mayan civilizations, our economy is fast destroying its environmental support systems, threatening future generations. The challenge is to restructure the global economy, replacing our fossil fuel-based, automobile-centered, throwaway economy with a new one that is environmentally sustainable. Brown outlines his vision of the new economy. It will be powered not with fossil fuels but with solar and wind energy. Its urban transport systems will be centered not around the automobile but around light rail and the bicycle. It will not be a throwaway economy but will be a reuse/recycle economy with a stable population. And building this new economy represents the greatest investment opportunity in history. There is no middle ground. Either we build an economy that is environmentally sustainable or stay with our existing economy until environmental deterioration leads to economic decline.

Green Shingles
by Peter Svenson

An anecdotal and lyrical exploration of the Chesapeake Bay, its surroundings, and its history, by the author of the National Book Award nominee Battlefield: Farming a Civil War Battleground. Alternating the personal with the historical, Svenson begins with a frustrating search for the perfect home for his wife and himself; eventually, they discover a rambling house on the bluff of the Eastern Shore. It overlooks the Bay with a view of the shipping lanes, and extending west to Annapolis and Baltimore. The ships lure him to hitch a ride on a Coast Guard cutter that repairs the buoys. Svenson chronicles the lore, history, and details of maintaining these rocking sentinels. Other chapters are devoted to wind patterns, the flotsam that washes up on his beach, the arcane art of canoe sailing, how not to build a garage, the history of a defunct amusement park near his home, the gangs of dogs and cats along the shore, the travails of being a landscape painter whose work is rejected by his own community, and an evocative tale of crewing on one of the tugs that push and pull the huge coal barges up and down the long bay. And finally, an epitaph on the eroding ecology of the Chesapeake and environs as run-off pollution, tourism, and overuse threaten to make this area a new Dead Sea. Svenson is a poet of the details of life. His evocations make unpromising topics fascinating, as if seen for the first time -- the sweep of these details builds to create a brilliant word picture of a place in time. Even if you've never been to the Chesapeake, after reading Green Shingles you will know it like the palm of your hand.
