Modern Marine Engineer's Manual
by
Significant changes in shipboard technology and regulations since the second edition of this standard manual ensure that this edition is a completely new textbook designed to meet the needs of today's engineering officers, port engineers, superintendent engineers, students, and other maritime professionals. Steam turbine propulsion systems are included but the coverage has been reduced in recognition of the popularity of main propulsion diesel engines, covered in volume 2, and the anticipated increasing applications of aeroderivative gas turbines. Reciprocating steam engines have been eliminated. Pumps, pumping systems, and heat exchangers, which are found on all ships, are given extensive coverage. Computer applications for machinery, and system management are presented, including planning the system, system hardware, system applications, database development, and data communications. The continual increase in the number and variety of international and national laws, regulatory rules, and standards such as ISO 9000 and the ISM code requires that ship operators be familiar with their responsibilities relative to these rules. The relevant material on these subjects is included in the text. Petroleum fuels are frequently treated chemically and processed mechanically on modern ships. The characteristics of fuels, fuel chemical treatment, fuel mechanical processing, and the avoidance of combustion chamber deterioration are presented. A chapter on safety and management discusses shipboard engineering operations, shipyard repair planning and economics, safety management, and safety organization.
