Soviet Naval Operations in the Great Patriotic War
Achkasov, V. I.; Pavlovich, N. B
Annapolis, MD, U.S.A.: Naval Institute Press, 1981 391 pages b/w photos - Since there is not a great deal in English on the Soviet Navy in the Second World War, this book is by definition, rather indispensable. Both authors are retired Soviet naval officers and historians and this book was published by the Soviet Ministry of Defense in 1973, then republished by the US Naval Institute. Overall, this book is professional and well-written, but there is obvious pro-Soviet bias that makes it suspect in places. Soviet naval losses are often glossed over or ignored. The book consists of ten chapters, covering pre-war activities; defensive minefields; defense of naval bases, amphibious landings; repelling amphibious landings; naval gunfire support and daily combat activity. The photographs are relatively few but fairly good. Oftentimes the level of detail is quite good about forces involved in a particular theater (e.g. Leningrad) and what they were doing, but German offensive actions are often downplayed. This is a solid, professional work that is essential for understanding joint Soviet operations in the Baltic and Black Sea areas, but readers should treat some controversial aspects with caution; this is history written by the victors who wanted to make the Soviet Navy's contribution to final victory appear in bold, while the cost to get there is in the footnotes, if at all. . First Edition English Language. Hard Cover. As New/As New. ( more information)
