Summary
Etel Adnan's eloquent and often poetic memoir, written as a series of detached paragraphs (her favorite form, as she states in her introduction), takes her from California to Beirut to Paris, as she writes about Lebanon's past and present, her own life and experiences, and the American war in Iraq. Her title is an allusion to William H. Gass's collection of stories, IN THE HEART OF THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY, a book she says made a "powerful impression" on her when she first encountered it in 1971.

"In this haunting memoir, Etel Adnan explores identity, history, displacement, and war from an Arab-American perspective. 'Contrary to what is usually believed,' she writes, 'it is not general ideas and grandiose unfolding of great events that impress the mind during times of heightened historic upheavals, but rather the uninterrupted flow of little experiences, observations, disturbances, small ecstasies, or barely perceptible discouragements that make up day-to-day living.'".
