Media Reviews
"[A] finely honed series of sketches of Ginsberg, his friends and the milieu in which they operate. Her book reads like fiction, a twentieth-century 'La Vie de Boheme'....You'll enjoy it even if you have never read a line of Ginsberg." -- Thomas Lask
-- New York Times

Publisher's Notes
Allen Ginsberg came to national attention when his poem "Howl" was the subject of a San Francisco obscenity trial in 1956. Since then, millions of copies of the poem have been read on college campuses and elsewhere all over America. His powerful imagination, political agitation, and magnetic charisma have made him a symbol of the cultural transformation of the past fifty years. Jane Kramer's book is an incisive and passionately human portrayal of Ginsberg's world and the people in it, whirling across America from San Francisco to Midwest college towns, from New York's East Village to California be-ins. Since his passing in 1997, Ginsberg has come to be recognized as a key figure in the American literary pantheon.

Journals
by Allen Ginsberg
In the 1950s and early 1960s, Allen Ginsberg and his fellow Beats led an insurrection that profoundly altered the American literary and cultural landscapes. Collected here are journal entries culled from eighteen notebooks that Ginsberg kept during this extraordinary period--thoughts, poems, dreams, reflections, and diary notes that intimately illuminate Ginsberg's actual travels and his mental journeys. They reveal a remarkable and fascinating life.

Screaming With Joy
by Graham Caveney
"Screaming With Joy," a chronicle of the life and work of Allen Ginsberg in both illustrations and words, is bound to delight old and new fans alike. A complex and gifted artist, Ginsberg is the best-known American poet of the post-war era and a walking embodiment of Western counterculture. Ginsberg's poems are famous for their seeming spontaneity -- they are open, forthright, didactic and contain a raw confessional quality that draw in readers of all ages. From the publication of his first book, Howl And Other Poems in 1956, Ginsberg attracted attention as a champion of countercultural concerns: pacifism, sexual freedom, drug experimentation, opposition to censorship and authority, and acceptance of Eastern religions. He used his natural skill for manipulating the media to huge effect and for a variety of causes. One such cause was to publicize the work of his friends and sometimes lovers Kerouac and Burroughs, fellow Beats. The youngest of the Beat writers, Ginsberg acted as the prophet and the public face of the group. He served as Kerouac's unofficial agent for On The Road and helped Burroughs bring The Naked Lunch to the attention of publishers and the public. He also acted as guru and business adviser to the young Bob Dylan. Every year, a new generation of teenagers discovers Ginsberg and his adult admirers turn back to him again and again. These fans will seek to know and see more of the man so instrumental in shaping our current culture. They will be thrilled to have the tribute, "Screaming With Joy," among their collections.

Remembering Elizabeth Bishop
by Gary Fountain
Widely regarded as one of America's finest poets, Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) led a turbulent life. She moved from place to place, struggled with alcoholism, and experienced a series of painful losses, even as she won numerous awards for her precise and brilliant poetry. This book presents over 120 interviews with relatives, friends, colleagues, and students, edited and arranged chronologically to follow her from birth to death. To situate the interviews - many conducted by the late Peter Brazeau - Gary Fountain has added a second stream of narrative, based on extensive research in Bishop's published and unpublished writings. The result is a more complete and detailed portrait of the poet than heretofore available - a volume in which those who knew her best bear witness to her life and work. Of particular importance are the detailed descriptions of Bishop's early years, personal relationships, and the dramatic events that shaped her career. Among the interviewees are numerous prominent intellectual and artistic figures, including John Ashbery, Frank Bidart, Robert Duncan, Robert Fitzdale and Arthur Gold, Robert Fitzgerald, Dana Gioia, Robert Giroux, Clement Greenberg, Thom Gunn, John Hollander, Richard Howard, James Laughlin, Mary McCarthy, James Merrill, Howard Moss, Katha Pollitt, Ned Rorem, Lloyd Schwartz, Anne Stevenson, Mark Strand, Rosalyn Tureck, Helen Vendler, and Richard Wilbur. Their recollections provide a telling counterpoint to Bishop's own accounts in her letters and other published works and should lead to a reevaluation of many aspects of her life and to reinterpretations of her poems and prose.

Off the Road
by Carolyn Cassady
The intimate story of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady written by the woman who loved them both. Off the Road is not only Carolyn Cassady's poignant account of their stormy love triangle, but a lively and accurate portrait of the Beat generation. Includes previously unpublished letters, photographs, and drawings from the author's private collection.

Bukowski
by Neeli Cherkovski
Charles Bukowski lived on the fringe. A misfit in his own home as a child and isolated by disfiguring acne in his adolescence, he discovered women and booze late in life and profoundly embraced both. "Bukowski" is the only full biography to date of the celebrated cult figure and underground poet and novelist. Cherkovski's longtime friendship with his subject lends a rare intimacy to this critical biography. 19 photos.
