Smith, Karen W

Cleveland, OH: Cleveland Museum of Art, 1978. 84 pp. Illustrations (including 6 in color), notes, bibliography. Constantin Guys (1802-1892) was a prolific and highly regarded illustrator of the 19th century. From 1854 until 1856, Guys covered the Crimean War for "The Illustrated London News." Included among his sketches is an eyewitness study of the charge of the Light Brigade, probably the best-remembered episode of the war. To view Guys' watercolors today is to see the dim record of history come to life. His written notations, reproduced in this exhibition catalog, extend the testimony of his drawings.
