The Norton Anthology of African American Literature
by
This landmark anthology includes the work of 120 writers over two centuries, from the earliest known literary work by an African American, Lucy Terry's poem "Bars Fight," to the fiction of the Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison and the poems of U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove. To ground the African American literary tradition in its vernacular roots, the anthology opens with a generous section of blues, gospel, spirituals, jazz, rap, folktales, sermons, prayers, testimonies, and speeches. From there follows a deep and wide selection of writing in all genres--poetry, short fiction, novels, drama, autobiography, journals, and letters--including eleven major works in their entirety: Frederick Douglass's "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave", W. E. B. Du Bois's "The Souls of Black Folk", James Weldon Johnson's "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man", Jean Toomer's "Cane", Richard Wright's "The Man Who Lived Underground", Gwendolyn Brooks's "Maud Martha", Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun", Amiri Baraka's "Dutchman", Toni Morrison's "Sula", Adrienne Kennedy's "A Movie Star Has to Star in Black and White", and August Wilson's "Fences". With a general introduction by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., period introductions, author headnotes, annotations, and bibliographies, The Norton Anthology of African American Literature brings to a new audience the vibrant and varied tradition of African American literature.

My One Good Nerve
by Ruby Dee
Intimate reflections on loving and living from an American treasure.

Go Gator and Muddy the Water
by Zora Neale Hurston
When Pamala Bordelon was researching a work on the Florida Federal Writers Project, she discovered writings in the collection that were unmistakably from the hand of Zora Neale Hurston, one of the leading writers of the Harlem Renaissance. Over half of the works included here have not been published or are only available in the Library of America edition of Hurston's works. As Hurston's fans know, all of her novels draw upon her deep interest in folklore, particularly from her home state of Florida. Here we see the roots of that work, from the wonderful folktale of the monstrous alligator living in a local lake to her recording of folk songs to her work on children's games and the black church. There are also fiery and controversial essays on race and the work of black artists. In a biographical essay, Pamala Bordelon, with the help of Hurston's niece, has re-created the years during which Hurston was working for the FWP and living in Eatonville. She has put together the portrait of a serious writer and folklorist who was running tight on money, but big on spirit. This book is an important new addition to Hurston's work.

God's Gym
by John Edgar Wideman
The first story collection in more than a decade from the celebrated African-American author of Brothers and Keepers presents an array of jazzy tales that have appeared in a variety of magazines and includes "Weight," "The Silence of Thelonious Monk," and "Who Invented the Jump Shot," among others. Reader's Guide available. Reprint.

The Works of Alice Dunbar-Nelson
by Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson
This curious anecdote, surely one of the oddest oral examinations on record, is only a tiny part of a larger, and even more curious, episode in the Enlightenment.
